I started mine in leftover Benecol butter cup & they're not even close to being ready to be transplanted. I planted some milkweed seeds the exact same day & they are much larger than the stick pumpkins but not by much. I may plant a few more of them this weekend now that it's getting really warm.

I've used various grow lights, and I agree with Col. Fryght's assessment. There are some seeds that need light to germinate, and if started indoors those will benefit from full-spectrum lighting. If you're growing orchids year 'round under artificial lighting, go with the pricy bulbs. But for giving cucurbits a jump start for a few weeks, I don't think it's worth the cost. You'd do them a lot more good by starting them in a flat and setting it outside when the weather permits. That...

Well sooner is always better than later, LOL, but I usually start when Michaels gets the new stuff in. If memory serves, that's usually around end July to early August. Once I see the new pieces in person and make those first purchases, I get bitten by the village bug and want to start my display. My dream is to someday have a designated spot where I could leave my village up year-round. I could do a lot more detail work on it if it was in a permanent location and I had more time to tinker...

notjustaphaze started a thread Lighting: candle help and ideas in Halloween Props
I recently had a conversation with a friend that works at a custom lighting company. Some of her lamps have plastic candles. She has been throwing away the extra ones. She just gave me my first batch of the leftover candles. They already have factory candle wax drips on them. They also come with a plastic sleeve to go on the inside to cover up any wiring. My only problem is that they are all only 4 inches tall and 1 inch wide so I will have to wire them. Give me some ideas how to use these. And...

WOOHOO!! I have 3 teeeeeny tiiiiiny pumpkin on a stick sprouts!! Pics later, but I saw them yesterday & did a litte happy dance! Especially since my raised garden bed from Home Depot showed up yesterday. Now to decide what's going into it. At least ONE pumpkin vine is going in there & into the yard, but I'm sure what else yet. I haven't visited the garden centers yet because I didn't want to get in over my head on plants. I kinda went nuts in a Walmart garden center with succulents (hens...

Just hit Walmart & the only Easter candy that was there & on sale was the actual Easter stuff, chocolate bunnies, chocolate eggs, etc. Nothing that could be used for Halloween. They probably tossed all that in the dumpster out back.

So ... I have got the basic gist of the party ... Dinner on a pirate ship with pirates and sea witches ... shenanigans will follow ... so I think I will start at the beginning and think about my "Save the Dates". I bought a bunch of little treasure chests and will put a gold coin in it with the date on one side and skull and cross bones on the other ... The actually invite will be One Eyed Willies Map from the goonies ...love the look of it ... but of course will make it into an invite in the...

Gotta go to Walmart tomorrow, I should check this out! I had no idea Peeps had such a long shelf life until I bought some Halloween ones a couple years ago. I just tossed them into the craft room somewhere with some vague plan to do something crafty with them but never did. I found them about a year later & thought they'd be super expired but they weren't so I just tossed them in a corner again so they're still somewhere in my craft room expiring sloooooowly!!:D

We've done this since we started having our annual bash in 2004. Since our last move, we turned the Great Room into the hotel lobby/museum, we actually have Bloody Mary's Bar set up year round (I do add other stuff for halloween), the dining room is the dining room, the kitchen is the Choice Cuts Chop Shop, Guest bedrooms are witch's room & creepy nursery. My hall if full of pictures of all kinds year round, creepy & regular.

So ... the first picture is the very children's birthday party version ... I would like it to look a bit more like this picture I am posting ... I want the table in the centre of the deck ... will have benches ... maybe even barrels to sit on ... price and availability to consider ... I want the ropes coming down and I want to wrap the ship in backdrops ... as if looking out onto the ocean ...

I've been to the Mad Monster Party in Charlotte, NC a few times. A lot of fun, but I've been out of town the last couple of times it came. I saw the advertisement for this years, and it looked like they've REALLY cut down on the number of celebrities attending. Kind of a shame. But, have a good time if you go!

Like this a lot. We're going to try for something similar. Going to use a Walgreen's skellie and corpse part of it, possibly replace the skull with a more realistic one, then cover it in a shroud of sorts. It will lay on top of the crypt like you've done. Hope to start construction of that by next month. I'll post some pics as we make a little more progress. We've had a "crew" for the past several years, and we typically average between 15-20 helpers to make things run smoothly. Our...

We've been working on props for our Druid Tomb theme haunt. I have 7 skull staffs in the works for some of our crew to carry, a few lanterns and soon we'll start on a crypt build which will be a focal point of one wall and a distraction for one of our main scares. My haunt partner (forum member lewlew) will be carving some foam Stonehenge-like obelisks and monoliths for the front display, as well as some interior catacombs. It should come together nicely. compared to last year, this build is...

After having been to the further away At Home fairly near Halloween last year I can say that they do a little bit of everything. From glittered cutesy stuff to generic Fall to scary clowns & bloody stuff. They also do moving props though IIRC they had a TON of inflatables. It's worth at least one trip early before everything is gone.

Thanks! Yes, just water. The fur is still soft and pliable on the parrot. Full strength paint would make the fur too stiff.

Hi, Hilda! I would love to submit a couple of your fabulous yard display photos for this upcoming article, but I would not do so without your permission. I will take no offense if you prefer not to share, but your yard is so great. Let me know what you think!

Congratulations on the limb removal. I was worried you were gonna be stumped. We've had so many in-laws visiting I'm thinking of putting my family tree through the wood chipper. I'll be here all week.

Looks like we CAN just scrap the stupid paint off the mirror. Just gotta figure out what nasty little tool is safest for the glass. (My keys scratch everything else up, figured it might work on the paint.)
  4. View Conversation
I am shocked - SHOCKED I tell ya. You mean there's just a mere mortal behind the curtain?

We initially wondered about the mirror but we saw another one there which had a scratch through the paint and thought...How hard could it be? We'll mess around.

It's not so much the organ part. Just looking for some kind of material that would be flexible enough to bend around a corner while strong enough to hold it's shape. We could buy rolls of veneer but it's not super cheap and I don' t know how well it would hold up without a backing. But I appreciate the response. Hope all is going well.

Hey you! Hope setup is going well.

I got two questions for the expert.
    1) We bought a mirror from Micheals that had a skull screened on the front of it - we want to take that off. Seems like a real mirror (it's heavy). Would the stuff you recommend for removing paint off blowmolds work? We don't want to damage the glass (I think the frame is a resin.)
    2) Working on the organ...we're modelling it very loosely on the Haunted Mansion version. The wood curves in the area where the keyboard is. Any thoughts on what we could user there? You just seem to know stuff.

No worries if you're too busy with setup to reply. We'll figure something out.

    Hey,
Those bats are super easy to make
All I did was make a paper bat pattern and transfer the pattern to a light weight piece of black material, cut it out, then I just pinned it to the existing hummingbird body. Painted the motor and ground stake black, and BAM, done
Oh, I painted the hummingbird black too
    Thanks for your nice comments!
