That's a great idea Dave. We started by glueing sheet of thin blue foam to some of the cheap thick white stuff, so it makes sense to just add a layer if you want to change it up.

We've played with the idea of making a more topical tombstone where we could just change out a song name or something each year. Don't know if we'll get to it.

The weather is changing here too. Georgia doesn't get too cold and this winter has been mild. I lived in the northeast many years so I don't miss the snow. Had some free time and needed to unwind so started repairing some props. You know how they wear out after awhile or need some paint touch ups. didn't have time in October so swore to get a jump on things this year. Had some old tombstones I never really used. They were my first attempts 15 years ago and the kids liked them but have not really held up. Rather than toss them, I bought some thinner foam, glued it on top then roughed them out and recarved/painted some newer designs. Will share the pics when they are doe.

Hey Dave. Sorry - slow response on my end as well. Impressed you've got a head start on things. We're hoping to do the same but there's some hurdles to get over. Looking forward to seeing your progress though.

Weather right now is beautiful. We're fortunate enough to get chinooks here due to the mountains. Got up to 60 here today as well but I'm sure we'll hit the deep freeze again before we're out of the woods.

Happy Halloween Dave! My year sounds lot like yours, minus the travel and working a haunted house. It was decent and people enjoyed it. Numbers were up a bit from last year. But I think I've got to reach a little higher to keep things interesting.

I don't know how it happens Dave, but I always notice your birthday for some reason. Must be a really, really important day. Maybe I sense a disturbance in the force or something. ;)

Anyway, hope you're having a great one - and that you'll have time to check in once Halloween gets underway.

Happy Halloween Dave! Great job on your haunt! That's a huge undertaking, starting a new theme and doing so much from scratch. So far we've always just built on stuff we had. But you knocked it out of the park. How did the ToTs react?

Yeah, we're pretty happy with our tombstones. We were dead set against having them for the longest time - I think because we hadn't really seen anyone do a great job of them (this would have been pre-forums) but I'd say half our comments this year come from our tombstones. We had one group of girls who got their mother to take photos of them with their favourites. And the Saturday before Halloween we had a group of 10 kids from a party just standing out front reading them for about 10 minutes. It's really surprising to us.

I love Minnesota - so many great things come out of there. But yeah, I hear the weather is a little too close to ours.

We had beautiful weather Halloween day, probably the nicest in 40 years. But we decided we'd leave stuff up for the Saturday and things turned nasty, so the main downside is it was pretty yucky cleaning up.

All our yard monsters are just masks with PVC bodies and old clothes, so nothing fancy but they work well.

Thanks again for checking out our photos. If you decide to do more tombstones and you need a hand at all, just holler. I've got some design software which is a little easier to work with than MS Word and I could likely whip up a template to your specifications.

Hey Dave! Just stopping by to wish you a Happy Birthday!

Sorry I missed the message below. Sounds like you've got a great start on your Halloween. That's a huge change in theme. I'm sure it's more stress but also likely a ton of fun to switch things up. We'll have to give it a go one year.

I'm sure the fallout theme will creep the heck out of the kids, but I don't know of anything as scary as starting school half-way through August! Ouch!

Not much going on here. So much to do Halloween is kinda on the backburner.

Hope you had a great day today!

Gobby, how is it going eh?! Hope your summer is going smoothly. Starting to work on some props for the nuclear fallout theme. Bought some items from MatrixMom so got a head start with gas masks etc. Also visited an Army/Navy store and asked if they had any older beat up items. They took me to the attic and let me rummage around. Found some good stuff for under $40. Also trying to retro fit some of the pirate props so I can get double use. Will be working at the haunted house again this year, so that cuts my prep time down as I lose the end of Sept and all of Oct weekends working there. Summer has flown by and the kids start school next week already. Hope you are doing well, let me know what you have been up to! Dave

Hey Dave! Good to see you here. We've had a nice week here and the ridiculous amount of snow we had is mostly gone except from the shadows. Sure to be more on it's way before we're done with it completely.

I've got some stuff I have to get out of the way before I get going on Halloween and it's taking longer than expected so I'll likely have a late start again this year. We were thinking of maybe adding some Disney themed stuff and maybe switching out the reaper with a stirring witch, but we may not get to it this year.

So nuclear theme for 2014? That sounds like a big change. I know your pirate theme was amazing but I'm feeling like we need to make some bigger changes to keep us interested, so I can relate. Looking forward to seeing what you got planned!

Hope things heat up for you soon - always easier to get going on things when the sun is shining. :)

Thanks for the offer on the Ouija board, Dave. I don't want to put you to any trouble though - I think I'm 99% of the way there. The felt on the magnet underneath may do it. I was using an older Ouija board as the base, but I didn't like the look of it but I still used it as a surface and it was very rough on the bottom. I just tossed some box tape on it to smooth it out. It's also possible the board is too thick. The other problem was I never measured the height of my motor so the box I made was actually a little shallow, which limited me adding in stuff to try and smooth out the motion.

I wonder if you could somehow cross the mechanism the mechanism for the haunted bookshelf with the mechanism for the ouija board. Not sure what you'd do to get things to go at an angle though.

I'm sure you'd have no problem with the Crank Ghost if you got the Ouija board working. We don't really have a great spot for one, but I've always wanted one.

Thanks again for the assist. Hope you get some time to dig in and enjoy stuff this year. :)

Thanks for the photo comments, Dave. Yeah, I made the Ouija board but I did something wrong. It would work for a bit and then just seize up. I was using a reindeer motor, so I'm not sure if the wood wasn't smooth enough or the magnets were too strong or what. But it would just stick and kind of auto reverse in place. It'd work for a few minutes at time but it was annoying. Hoping to invest in some nicer motors this year.

I actually traced the Ouija Board on the computer though because I couldn't find a nice one locally for cheap, so I can print out copies when I need them. That's a plus.

Yeah, he's one of these candy dish greeter guys that I got on sale cheap years ago.
I made a sort of plywood exo-skeletong for him to give him more height and we've used him in the yard for the last 5 years - we called him "spy guy". Don't know why it took me until this year to figure out that if I wrapped his head with cheese cloth, he'd fit better into our classic monster theme. But the head is kinda wasted now.

Anyways, thanks again. And I hope I'm not laying on the guilt too much. It's just good having you around. :)

Thanks Dave. You can definitely be forgiven for missing a birthday this time of year. Hope all is well and maybe we'll get to see a bit more of you on here this year. (Wow, I sound like someone's mother). Don't be a stranger!

All good Dave! Just glad you haven't vanished completely! Take your time and come back when you can! :) (But be prepared to work! ;) )

Dave! Dave, have you been lurking? Where you been?

Just stopped by to wish you a happy birthday! Hope you find time between all your real life "commitments" to grace us with your presence! ;)

Hope all is well! Have fun today and hopefully we'll see you back here soon! :)
