We used to live near a street where they went all out for Halloween and Christmas. You had to in order to live there. You couldn't opt out because it was one of the provisions of the HOA. Other than that though, hardly anyone bothers these days. Nobody tries. Most people are lazy. It's really sad.
Actually, I found this video from 10 years ago of the street for anyone interested.
Nope, not at all. In fact, there are less people doing it now than there were the first year we were here. The vast majority of people who do it at all are just inflatables and store-bought stuff. We are the only ones that make our own props and certainly the only ones that add to the display every year.
It's worse here, there is a Walgreens at least every other block for miles. There's one place that has a Walgreens, a CVS and a Rite-aid on three out of four corners. If you walk into any of them, they all suck.
You need a 12 volt AC to DC converter which are very, very common. The 12VCD 5amp power bricks that you use with laptops and game systems work perfectly and are readily available almost everywhere cheap.
I hated American Scream because like most other pseudo-documentaries, it focuses on people with serious psychological problems and implies that's how home haunters work. If it's not an accurate representation, it's not a documentary. I don't watch documentaries to be entertained, I watch them to be informed.
