The old Rod Serling "Twilight Zone" did a take-off of that old plot, using paintings hanging on a wall to illustrate the impending doom of the episode's protagonist. Scared the Dickens out of me when I was a kid.

I vaguely remember the story "Where's my Golden Arm?" that sounded similar, she calls from the grave looking for her arm, then the yard, the front door, stairs etc.

OMG!! LOL Bloody Bones! My grandparents used that one on my mom, uncle and me when we were all little. My gma would be telling my uncle when he was younger that if he didn't go to bed that bloody bones was going to come and get him. Then my gpa was outside scratching on the side of the house and window!! LOL I have such a great family! []

I remeber a childhood spooky story, basically went like this,
The phone rings, when you pick up the phone a voice on the line says
Im the viper and I am coming to your house,I will be their in an hour.
This would count down the time every time the viper called,
Finally the door bell rings, and you filled with fear open the door, and their he stands, an old man,and he says,
IM THE VIPER,I HAVE COME TO VIPE YOUR VINDOWS!

The version of the story I heard as a child bascially went like this:
A little boy/girl was asked by one of the parents to go to the store and buy some liver for dinner. Well you know how kids are, they were on the way to the store, got caught up playing and before you know it, the store was closed. Well, being terrified of going home without dinner, they see a cemetery with a fresh grave. So, what's a kid to do, he/she takes the liver from the dead body and brings that home for dinner. The child tells the parents he/she isn't feeling well and promptly goes off to bed. When it gets dark and right before falling asleep, the child hears something to the effect "I'm on the first step, give me back my liver!"; "I'm on the second step, give me back my liver!" and so forth on up the stairs. After the dead guy get's to the top of the stairs and says "I'm at your door, give me back my liver!", you then suddenly SCREAM at the top of your lungs, "Gotcha!" to the person you are telling the story to (and grab them if possible). This is how it was told to me when I was a child and I still remember it to this day. Hope this helps.

"What an awful name. Willard. If you had a stronger name, Frank Martin wouldn't push you around. Or maybe you've found a girlfriend if you'd had a more handsome name. Mark or Klye. Clark. From now, Willard, your name's Clark."

This concept of the entity getting closer and closer is played out in several stories in the Scary Stories trilogy. Check out Arabella. http://www.castleofspirits.com/arabella.html
