Default Scariest scenes in horror movie history

    My picks

    1. The Ring - I saw her face, the cut away to Katie in the closet.

    2. The Conjuring - Christine sees something in the closet and wakes her sister Nancy to investigate. The audience doesn't see what it is, nor does Nancy, but what Christine sees and describes is terrifying.

    3. The Exorcist - The spiderwalk down the stairs by a possessed Reagan.

    4. The Shining - Danny riding his big wheel down the halls of the Overlook Hotel, turns the corner and sees The Twins.

    5. The Sentinel (1977) - Alison woken up at night by something upstairs making a lot of noise, and causing her chandelier to rock back and forth, goes upstairs to investigate.

Honorable mention - Poltergeist -Robbie wakes up and sees the toy clown missing from the foot of his bed, Carrie- The ending dream sequence where Sue goes to lay down flowers at Carrie's grave, Exorcist 3 - The scene at the Nurse Station

What are some of your favorites?

I definitely agree with your #1.

I saw the Ring in theaters with my friends when I was 15 and that is my #1 scariest movie of all time. As in... I don't watch that movie and will not allow it in my household. And I love horror movies... I own 100 at least but not that one.

The only other movie that has ever come close to that was Paranormal Activity.

So 2. for me would be the last scene of Paranormal Activity where the demon shows itself. Awful. I don't want to watch that one again either.

    3. The Zelda creepy sister scene from Pet Semetary, although still one of my favorite movies.

Scariest scenes in horror movie history
Pretty much every vampire scene in Salem's Lot. That whole damn movie scarred me for life.

Starting with Geoffrey Lewis' character sitting in that rocking chair...just...rocking...

Ralphie Glick outside his brother Danny's window in Salem's Lot. Here ya go, now YOU can be scarred for life too:

And his brother Danny outside Mark's window, equally as terrifying.

Then we have the scene where we first meet The Master

    And then his death.

    Nope, not sleeping tonite, nopenopenope.
Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers, the best damn little band you should be listening to!

    Event Horizon
All the flash scenes of torture and cannibalism from the other side of a black hole. <shiver>
It's a long way back to Jurassic Park.

I'd have to include that classic scene from Misery in which Annie smashes Paul's ankles on my list.

I love 'Salem's Lot. Only movie that terrified me as a kid and it was a made for TV mini-series that my mom allowed her 6 year old son to watch alone! My uncle and older brother added considerably to the terror of the window scene but that's another story in and of itself. Needless to say, there was rope, carved potato fangs, and several months of being awakened at 3am involved before mom finally caught them in the act...
My addition to the list is from the movie: Audition. The scene where she's staring at the phone for a creepy, extended period and then it rings. When the bag in the background started jerking around, I actually jumped an inch in my seat and yelled 'WTF!'. I've watched hundreds if not thousands of horror movies at this point so I don't scare easy. That scene came out of nowhere and shook me up. The rest of the movie is just one long non-stop roller coaster of nightmares but that scene kicks everything off.
