Thought I would share the way I spruced up my cemetery fencing this past year. I never wanted to spend the money for decent fence finials and I never could budget the time to make any.
My wife likes to use a lot of these Air Wick brand air fresheners around the house that you plug into a wall outlet. They have a small glass bottle holding the actual air freshener that you have to replace as it runs out.
I noticed that the plastic cap that you remove from the refill will fit right over the end of 1/2 inch PVC pipe. I told my wife not to throw them away and give them all to me (I needed about 80 of them).
After saving them for a whole year here's what I did.

This is the cap that comes on the refill bottle:

I made a jig out of a piece of scrap wood and some nails to hold several of the caps in place while I spray painted them with Black Krylon Fusion paint.

The cap will look like this after painting:

After all of them were painted I placed one cap on each PVC pipe, drilled a small hole and used a short #8 wood screw to hold it in place.

Here's a pic of the finished fence section (this is actually two fence sections strapped together and stored on the ceiling of my garage):

I like these because from a distance they look pointed, but in reality aren't sharp at all. Plus the fact they were FREE !

Great idea! Might try this; not only will the fence tops look good, but the house will smell good as well.

those look great! i was planning on the corragated plastic "spear" toppers, but this idea is much better... i use those in our house as well.
I save all kinds of crap for halloween, u name it, and it can probably serve a purpose somewhere,,,deodorant balls, ripped up clothing, styrofoam up the yinyan,,,scraps of this and thats,, i need another big garage just for storage / work room!!!!

    Thanks for the compliments, everyone.
I was hoping this idea might come in handy for others. If anyone else does this, be sure to post some pics!

(NOTE: If you make the same kind of jig I used, put a small wad of masking tape-sticky side out-on top of each nail. This keeps the cap from spinning around as you try to spray paint it.)

I like that idea. that would look pointed from a distence in low lighting. Great project.
