Since I’m hosting a Halloween party this year (my first in this home), I wanted to create an atmosphere that my guests would be hesitant to experience, but they will have no choice if they want to use the bathroom. Only a few of my friends have actually been in my house, so the others have no idea on what to expect which adds to the mystery of my supposed haunted house (my home was previously owned by an elderly couple that passed away in the house). I don’t have a specific story for the scene or the house, just that it’s haunted. The scene I’m submitting is my hallway.

The hallway is 40” wide and 14’ long…it leads to all 3 bedrooms and the main bathroom. There are also 2 closets and an access point to the attic.
Anyway, my hallway has been painted blood red with black trim (used to be standard white). I’m in the process of applying real aged wooden slat panels to each exposed wall section to simulate a decrepit structure. The slat panels are not solidly attached—they move very easily. All the exposed wall sections will have either a movable slat panel or static slats. The plan is to attach an unbalanced motor to each panel that will vibrate the panels violently when a PIR sensor is activated. A children’s nursery type soundtrack will then begin playing (similar to poison prop’s soundtrack mix). The soundtrack will have haunting sounds such as delayed/reverbed laughing, crying, whispering, a jack-in-the-box toy sound effect, nursery rhymes, and an eerie background sound. I’m mixing the soundtrack myself using Adobe Audition. The speakers are not typical speakers, they are transducers that were designed to be hidden behind a wall or ceiling panel and the sound travels through the panel so it seems like the whole room is emanating sound. The hallway will be dimly lit with green LED strip lights behind the slats that will flicker during the activation. I may also have a small fog machine turn on and have a head peeking out from the attic (maybe like that boy from the grudge). The doors and ceiling will have creepy fabric covering them and I may lay some Spanish moss on the carpet. The entrance to the hallway will have black fabric strips draped in front so guests cannot see into it.

The main bedroom (at the end of the hallway) will have a static scene that the guests can view. The scene will have 3 or 4 skeleton nuns gathered around the bed and in the bed will be a girl like Samara (from the ring movie). I haven’t decided how I want to animate the girl yet; she will either shake violently or do the head spinning thing like in the exorcist. The room will be dimly lit with red lights or candles. The sound effect for the room will probably have some type of horrific screaming with haunted organ in the background.
You can see the work in progress in the picture—I started this week and hope to have it done by mid-month since I still have other props to make. The picture shows the main light on---it will not be this bright or friendly My homes overhead lights are on 2 circuits and I’m wiring both circuits through the thunder machine light flickering box, so that will certainly add to the overall effect.

So far I have spent maybe $40 on various supplies for this project and another $60 on the 4 transducers.

Post edited---included dated newspaper in second picture.

I didn't see anything in the rules about the scene needing to be completed by a certain date---did I miss it in the fine print?

Thanks...I read that much, but where does it say the scene has to be completed by the 12th? Is it implied?

    Anyway...If I don't finish by then, I won't loose sleep over it.

Thanks for the kind words and good luck to you both.

That's a good idea You have there. I like the control You have of victims walking down the narrow hallway. Hurry and finish, want to see more. that attic access is great. An air blaster would be the end of them as they gazed into the room.

Voting on the 13th...I think that implies finished by the 12th. It would be difficult to make a decision on an unfinished scene. The contests I have been in didn't allow changes to the entry after the poll is open. Not sure if that is what they do here.

I love your hallway. Man you go all out for your party. Good luck. I hope you get it complete on time because it is a great project.
I LOVE TO PICK UP CANDY OUT OF THE LAWN. IT IS THE SIGN OF SUCCESS!
