A relay acts an electro-mechanical switch. It can be used to close an electrical circuit where the voltage on the circuit is not the same as the voltage used to switch the relay. Normally a smaller signal controls the current on a higher voltage circuit. A solid state relay doesn't have moving parts. It's faster, quieter, and no sparking...than an ice cube relay. SSR (solid state relays) are also less sensitive to shock and vibration and therefore more durable.

What DarkLore said.... For some reason my response results vanished.
