SB, it is sad that you will be departing us a selling of your loot, but I can fullly understand where you are comming from. I and my wife our in our 50's and have cut back our haunt from an entire house to just a yard haunt. But like most everyone else has said I do it for the neighborhood, We have one neighbor that tells us it is not halloween yet until we decorate. Once he see's the decorations go up him and everyone else decorates. Keep your chin up and just be thankful for the memories.![]()

It truly saddens me to see so many people getting older and giving up thier haunts, I dread the day that I can no longer do what I love.

I know this thread has gotten off track, but I need to comment on what has been a growing concern for myself, related to the above two posts. I'm in my early 50's but have already looked ahead and formulated a loose time table of sorts to "scale back" a bit. I've sold off a lot of small things this year. Kind of "de-cluttering" and making more storage, but also downsizing my collection to simplify set-up/tear down. Now I know I have some good haunting years left, but with my two older boys being gone this year, I'll have a lot more to do myself or will have to enilst help for setting up/tearing down. We currently do a walkthrough and I have a lot of kids who help out but I envision going back to just a front yard display within the next 8-10 years and being content with making it as imaginative and fun as I can. I figure as long as I can do the set-up w/o too much trouble for myself or others, and as long as I have the help to run it, I'll continue with the big show, but eventually, it will revert back to it's humble beginnings albeit more elaborate that when we first started. As has been said many time in many threads, we can only hope our efforts have inspired a new generation of haunters to keep Halloween fun and exciting. I know I've heard kids come through and say "I hope my house can be like this someday." Me too!

Well I am 51 and my haunt is still growing. I can't see me ever not doing the things I enjoy. It is those small wonderful moments of pleasure that make me feel alive. So it is really hard for me to understand. I know if a car just sits in the yard, you end up with more problems then if you would have kept driving it. I feel sorry for all the folks that are selling because of job loss. In these times I have seen that with my friends and family. But in the end you always have to make the choice that you can live with it. Not the one everyone chooses for you.
