I'm looking for a circuit diagram that uses a minimum of parts, be inexpensive, and easy enough that a total idiot like me who usually doesn't explore past the kitchen ideas to build.

Basic premise: Using an analog clock, power is applied to the second hand sweep. As the second hand moves it comes in contact with a metal zone that completes the circuit for a predetermined amount of time. Onces the second hand leaves the zone the load is shut off slowly with the aid of a capacitor.

Now I know that what I described is like a standard sprinkler timer but I need something that doesn't care what time of day nor what day it is.

What are you using this for? For example, is it for a fading light or some kind of prop control?
