Does anyone have an idea to make an old fashioned style lantern? It is really hard for me to get them. Either I don't have $$ or no one has them. Could I make one using a soda bottle? Any ideas will help me greatly.

Walmart always carries them pretty cheap, you just need to age it up

Sometimes you can find them at thift stores too.
Walmart has "Camping Lanterns" for about $5.00
I age them and wire for lights.
You could use tea lights too.
Depends on how much light you want.

Looking at one, I think you could absolutely make your own with use of some junk items. I think a 2 liter clear soda bottle for the glass could work. Then maybe an upside down candle holder for the top, and some kind of dish for the bottom, and some cheap wire wrapped around the soda bottle, and make some foam for the surrounding metal pieces then paint to match, you might have something there. If you want to put a bulb in it, just be careful, don't want to melt plastic.

There is a pattern in the latest issue of ScrollSaw magazine Pg.65 for a lantern made from wood and a mason jar.
    Looks fairly easy.

I actually was able to pick one up at Walmart a few years ago for like six bucks. All I did was etch the class and add a flicker bulb and wala!

I LOVE my hubby so much! He's the one who takes my ideas and pimps that UP! He came up with the idea of using cans to make a rustic type lantern. I have a picture saved somewhere that shows an old lantern made out of a tin can with a handle and lots of holes in it. Miners are poor, yo! I have some great 8" tall spaghetti sauce cans with a white interior. All we gotta do is put hanger wire on the top and punch cool holes in them and add my LED flicker candles and age them! Such a great idea and nothing to purchase! (NOT that I don't totally love the regular lanterns but a $13 - 17 ea. can't afford as many as I need for this haunt!)

I'll post pics when I get some finished.
