Thanks everyone for the good tips. I think another tip would be not to worry about the photo completely pushing out to the inside of the glass. that makes it easier and you can't really tell from the outside..when you try to make it tight, getting that hair on the outside of the photo is almost impossible.

Anyway, a detail that almost everyone neglects, is to use an old jar that has colored glass. My original creation was in a green bottle. You're likely to find one in an a resale store or antique shop for a few bucks.

The image quality won't come through as well in the colored glass, but it hides all of the flaws. And the lack of total transparency makes it even creepier and mysterious.

This is such an interesting project and not costly either. When I first saw this topic I was thinking you used a latex mask in a jar. I would love to see photos of what people created. Do you add liquid to the jar? I'm not clear on whether the image is just a roll up fit to the jar or there's more involved. Would love additional info and direction. Thanks.

It's just rolled up. The trick is to find an old glass bottle with imperfections. The difference in glass thickness makes using water unnecessary. If you use a newer bottle that is uniform in thickness, then I guess adding liquid might help.

Madhaus, this is a brilliant idea, well done! It's worked for a few years for the others and I drove an hour tonight to pick up 8 old bottles, they were so dusty, they are the old chemical style bottles from some ancient chemist somewhere near liverpool, they're going to be great. The bottles are old but I am going to use a coloured dye, or possibly light varnish to give them a different colour, which is a shame because they are CAKED in dust already and are genuinely aged! I might put the varnish on the inside & then shake it, see if it works that way.

Madhaus- sorry your ideas were stolen, I read your site when i first started looking for this. Keep up the good work though, if you still have a copy of your work somewhere would like to see it!

I've been waiting for his PDF book for a while now - have the money just sitting here but it's now getting a bit close to Halloween.

Just trying to make the best product I can. Everything is being rewritten and photographed in hi-res. I think my tutorials were okay for freebies, but I want them to be perfect for the book.

That's OK Derek, I'll wait till it's out - just that I feel like a kid that has candy waved in it's face and then told to 'wait till after dinner' lol

Hey...are all the images in this thread usable? In other words, I need a printable head. Or does anyone have updated links for face shots like these? I'm trying to make a head in a jar. I have a blue Mason jar to put it in. Thanks!
