Default String light hack

Is there anyway to hack a 50 light set of Christmas or Halloween lights down to 12? Possibly the chaser sets.

I want to put them in the PVC candles but most light sets have more bulbs then I need.

What wires to cut?
Will it kill the string if I shorten them?
Is there a certain type that I need?
Will it effect the flashing?

Thanks in advance.

Ok, well, I'll bite on this one. Here is what I would do, take the plug off of the end of the string of lights. If it is possible to reuse it (aka: If there is a screw to get at the insides of the plug, manipulate the wires, and put it back) then hang onto it, otherwise go down to the hardware store and pick up a replacement plug. Then cut the string down to the length that you need. There are two wires, and each of these should be attached to one of the terminals on the plug (aka: There is usually a screw that holds the wire into place. Place one wire on each screw. There could be another mechanism to hold the wires other then a screw, but the concept is the same).

Once you close the plug up, it should work, plug it in and give it a try!

Now for the flashing: On a string of christmas lights there is one bulb on the strand that causes the flashing to occur. It usually has a slightly different glass/plastic bulb then the others. If you want the lights to flash include this light in your hacked strand. If you don't, then remove it and substitute it for a standard bulb from what you have left over.

Let me say that I have never hacked a string of lights before, but the wiring of them is pretty simplistic, and I believe that in theory this is sound. But this is certainly an "attempt at your own risk" sort of project.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the advise HH.
I am going to cut up a strand and see if I can figure it out, I was just hoping someone might have done this before and would know. All the alternating wires in the strand just had me wondering.
Thanks again.

Removing lights from a strand will cause the others to burn brighter and burn out faster. You will need to add a resistor to compensate for the removed bulbs, also with chase light you have at least four strands of lights that make up on stand

What about wrapping the extra lights in electrical tape? Those little lights don't heat up very much (especially when you have them "chasing" each other), so heat shouldn't be an issue.
