I have read all the threads on constructing a pirate’s helm but the link to the step by step instructions for making it rock back and worth is no longer working. Does someone have pictures and instructions for rigging a moving wheel? I know most people are using a rotisserie as the motor, but from there I’m lost. I plan on buying a 48 inch wheel and making a stand for it. Later I will attach a pirate skeleton as the captain.
on some rotisserie motors or a deer head motor when the motor can't move further in one direction it reverses, it might be as simple as putting stops to keep you wheel from turning to far
I believe most people use a windshield wiper motor. Mount the motor in the right bottom of the helm, with a rod connected to, say, 1 o'clock near the hub. Each rotation of the motor will rotate the wheel slightly. Connect the hands of the skelelton to the wheel itself, and it'll look like he's steering.
I was in the same situation about 2 weeks ago. I was farting around in my shed and i found one of my animated deers from Xmas. I stripped the entire motor assembly from the deer, and I mounted it to my post with the wheel on it. I connected the same exact rod that was on the deer to a low point on the wheel.
When turned on, the wheel moves to the left about 3 spokes, then as the motor gets stuck, it switches direction, making the other side turn about 3 spokes.
It gets the awesome rocking wheel effect perfectly. Also, it makes a ceaking wood sound when turned on.
Ill add some pictures later when I get home, right now im at work.
I have the wheel. I have the motor. But I am having trouble getting the motor and cam attached to the wheel in such a way that it rocks back and forth. I can get it to turn one way and I can get it to turn all the way around, but how can I get it to turn one way and then go back to the original position, and repeat.
