Saw this posted in another thread:

    http://www.spookyblue.com/halloween/coffin/

I have personally used an old fence we ripped down. Took the fencing and chopped it up - braced it together. Didn't cost me anything (though not everyone has an old fence to take down). Creepy and old looking as well.

Maybe going to a lumber yard and asking for scrap wood? SOmetimes they have warped, broken, chipped, etc wood that they'll either give or sell cheap.

Or possibly find a wooden pallet somewhere. Take those planks and you've got yourself and old wooden coffin.

That's pretty cool, I'm just going to decide if I want to do it with wood or foam board. I made a whole cemetary out of foam board. I would like the coffin to be a bit more stable. How did you brace it together? With nails or glue?

I just took more parts of the fence and laid it across a set number of planks and nailed it. Mind you, it was a very primitive coffin - square, gaps between the planks, and not a 'perfect' shape. We had one side of the top swing open using some hinges. I then lined the inside with white trash bags to look like lining - either I'd hide in it (the tot'ers ALWAYS wanted to sneak a peak, so when they get close, I'd pop open and it'd be a good scare). I also took my answering machine from my phone - where it has a the speaker phone on one end and put it inside the coffin with a fake hand hanging out. When the tot'ers got close, I'd yell something through the phone and, again, it'd be a good scare.

Like I said, it was primitive - it was maybe 5 or 6 fence planks wide and deep, held together with more fence and nailed. It only lasted 2 halloweens. The wood was old and fragile (reason we took it down as a fence).

I built this in a couple hours on Sunday, following these directions:

    http://64.226.23.133/woodycarr/scare..._coffin_2.html

Cost was a little over 25$, as the wood was about 1.60$ per piece
