my theme for 2012 is to make the whole garage inside an hopefully at least the front of the outside look like an Egyptian tomb complete with mummies, crypts, treasures, statues, pheonix, hyrogliphics (spelling?) etc.
can anyone give ideas and TUT's on making any props for this theme please?
so far i have.....
- found great ideas from Clad in Shadows here on HF (GREAT WORK )
- a few pics i found on google for ideas
-for invites or party favors i will make 3D pyramids where the top lifts up so i can put something insde.
- thinking of making a mosaic of a pheonix....but what to do with it?? a table or wall hanging??
- will make pottery out of paper mache" perhaps
- i already have 1 mummy made from years back and will tweek him to look more authentic
need many more ideas and TUTs if anyone can help please!
Hey boogybaby - Don't know if this will help, but here is a pic of one of my first ever props made a long time ago. He looks a little goofy and is in need of a new wrap, but is always a big hit with the kids. He looks much better at night. They even used him at the High School homecoming this year. (Mummy theme)
Anyway, maybe something like this standing outside guarding the entrance. I would make him more evil, but he never makes the re-do list because of time. Maybe next year. Just an idea on something big guarding the tomb. Make sure you done glue to the and bottom together, as it will be a nightmare to store. He is not bad as of now for storing.
If you are going to have a party along with your garage haunt, you can always serve something (baked good, chocolates, ice cream) using a pyramid mold. There are pyramid molds made in silicon or in a stainless steel or tin (go to www.surlatable.com) and do a search for "pyramid" for some sample molds.
Since you mentioned doing an invitation, I guess you could also incorporate the pyramid form for this as well. You could bake a pyramid "cupcake" and insert the invitation written on a narrow strip of "papryus" rolled up thinly and inserted into the pyramid from the bottom up (I'd wrap the invite in tin foil to keep it clean and noticable so its not accidentally eaten). I'd probably use yellow cake mix and keep it unfrosted and/or topped with some light brown sugar or light brown or golden decorating sugar to keep it sandy looking. Pack the cupcake in a cupcake box and deliver or hand it out along with a card or note on the box. The note would reference having to "dig" among the pyramid for a clue to a fun event or something like that. You just need to be careful to make sure they don't just eat the pyramid whole without finding the clue first.
Try doing a search on HF for Egyptian. There are some good ideas out there already. I've been working on collecting items for this theme over the last few years and there's some great ideas for it. Should be a fun theme. Also look under the craft section on HF for canopic jars you can add to your display.
BTW whether you do your tomb walls using foam sections you carve into or paint the symbols on paper or plastic sheeting or fabric, consider using one of those art projectors to beam hieroglyphics onto the material and trace from there. They'll probably turn out better that way than by freehand.
thanx you guys
i appreciate the help and have also been doing a search on here for "Egyptian" and even "Indiana Jones" themes and have found many many GREAT ideas!
we will make several different mummies to display, and we are looking into the Egyptian cuisine to see what we might try for the buffet. if that fails then we will do mummy dogs and mummy mini pizza etc. the pyramid shaped cupcakes may be added too
for an activity we are thinking maybe burry a bunch of "treasures" in plaster of paris and have the guests chizzel and dig them out to retieve their party favors lol but what do we burry???? any suggestions?.......maybe quartz rocks, fake gems, necklaces (like the marty gras kind) fake gold coins..........?????????? what do ya'll think?
I was going to suggest doing the "pyramid cupcake hidden invite" as a non-edible sand and glue based invite instead but then pictured people at home having to make a mess breaking it apart. So I thought the edible cupcake was a better way to go and at least people could enjoy eating the dug up dessert.
There is a kid's kit out there, saw at TJ Maxx a few times that is an archeological dig-like item. There's a few items sealed in side of a plaster-like material and the kids have to break it apart to find it. I would think about the smashed apart item/s and consider if that is something you want your party people having to handle and clean up.
As for buffet food items, how about skewered and grilled chicken (and/or beef strips) that you can call skewers of cobra or crocodile. Serve with some dipping sauces. Rhodes Bread company used to have online a how-to on making alligator (in the case of Egypt call it crocodile) bread sculptures. Did a quick look but didn't see it any longer but the ideas are in one of their books, "Kids' Ideas with Frozen Dough", which they still sell on their website. Crocs have narrower jaws so you could adapt the gator when making him.
If you are looking for a party game, maybe you could do a two-team game. Each team has a mummy with amulets inside the wrappings. Each amulet could have a clue on the back of it. The teams would have to unwrap their mummy, find all the amulets and figure out the clues. First team with correct answer wins whatever. Another variation would be each amulet has a letter or word on the back of it. They gather all the letters and figure out what it spells.
For beverages you need to have at least one beer drink since historically the Ancient Egyptians made beer.
As for props you might want to pick up the Snake in the Basket prop (BuyCostumes has it on clearance now with an extra 35% off until Sunday, use discount code from website when checking out). That would make it just over $16. I bought this guy last year and it's a very nice quality prop. At $16 I think it's also a good price for him.
