Does anyone have detailed directions for building a monster in a box? I know everyone has their own taste in the crate itself, but I'm looking for details on the mechanics of it, hopefully using a wiper motor. Thanks-

Here's a good example with instructions and pictures.

That's a good one, but it seems needlessly complicated for what is a simple prop.
On the last page there are some links to MIBs others have built.

The directions are very detailed! Yet complicated.....not sure if I will go with that much (circuit boards, ect) or just fix it up with the light and wiper motor. Thanks for the link Pod

Thanks for pointing out the variations at the end Screaming Demons - I think I can use the different ideas to come up with one of my own!

Corn Stalker, I love some of the props that members here have built. But sometimes they seem to be a little more complex than they really need to be. Simpler is always better as far as I'm concerned.

Heres how I made mine, which works well.
Uses a drill instead of a wiper motor.

Good luck!

Hey Phantom Blue,
I've been wanting to do a MIB for some time now and I really like the simplistic design of yours. Not to mention I already have everything needed to build a version of your MIB.... Just wondering though, how well has the wooden arm used for the lid opening mechanism held up over the years?...I mean with all the torque and violent lid slamming action of the mechanism, have you found there to be any issues with using plain wood for this or would you recommend using metal or something else?....Also, was the motion detector reliable in this setup?...Did it trigger when you needed it to?...Thanks in advanve."By the pricking of my thumb....something wicked this way comes"

Hi CycloneJack -
First I will say that I got the idea from Monster List and it looks like the creator was Mark Butler and the site was Bananaman.
For the lid pusher, I used a scape piece of PVC pipe painted black, which works great. After about 8 years, PVC is still holding up. I don't see a 1" dowel having any problems, so use one of the two, it will be fine.
As far as the triggers, I made 8 of theses and have a love hate feelings for these. They don't always go off 100% and sometimes go off unexpectedly. When I was making them, I saw somewhere that if you use a thin piece of tape over the sensor, then paint all black, that will cut down on the sensitivity. That does help, they do work and for the cost not a bad solution.....but I will someday replace with a more 100% reliable solution.
On a side note....I always get a good scare but feel that I could get a bigger scare if I had more movement instead of just the lid going up and down. I was thinking about adding a airbag to the bottom and after doing some research I found this solution.

I think that this will get a bigger scare and will work great. Doug Anderson at fright props has been easy to work with and the site has lots of things that I can use, just need the budget to get some.
Hope this helps....let me know if you have any other questions.
Happy Haunting!
PB
