Just received my package of fog scent solution in the mail. Opened it and was surprised at the scent that emanated from the package.
On to the review:
About a two weeks ago; I came across a website product advertising an oil-based scent that when added to fog juice would add that extra "wow factor" to your haunt. Who wouldn't want that? I had heard about Sinister Scents on the forum and always wanted to try it out. Well Forum Novelties' version was priced right and the names of "moldy morgue" and "creepy crypt" sounded very promising. Each planogram-ready unit contains two little packets of fog scent (packets that might be mistaken for soy sauce and duck sauce, if they didn't have the words "creepy crypt" and "moldy morgue" written on them)
Forum Novelty also sells other scents too, "candy corn" and "pumpkin spice". Which Im positive will smell accurate! Anyway, As stated before...when the package finally arrived, I couldn't wait to tear into it and give it a smell. Well, I didn't need too. I got a sneak whiff of it as I pulled the envelope from my mail box. I opened the envelope, and was surprised at how small the scent packets were. It stated that each packet would make 2 gallons worth of stench-ready fog. That's good!
Instead of dumping the packets into the fog juice; I first poured them into a more permanent container.(some small glass vials)
Then, to really test the accuracy of the scents I offered a blind smell test to my family.
The results:
Moldy morgue: B-
This scent received fairly high praise from my family. But they did say it smelled nothing like a "moldy morgue" Who in my family's been to a morgue!? What's a morgue smell like? Well, It shouldn't smell like this?! So how did it smell?...to be frank...grass! Yeah Grass! Freshly cut grass! Why in the world did they call this "Moldy Morgue"? "Graveyard" would have been a better name. To me it smelled a little like "anise" too! Eh not at all what I was expecting. But as far a scents go, it would defiantly work for a graveyard or forrest! so that's good; I guess.
Creepy Crypt: D
This scent is just plain odd! You can tell right away what's inside it. And what's inside this oil-based scent is strange! Everyone that smelled this said it had the un-mistakable smell of...Hickory. Hickory? Really? Yeah, in fact, I would have sworn this was the commercially available "liquid smoke" you can purchase at any grocery store if it wasn't for a barely noticeable secondary smell. This stuff just smelled wrong! The hickory-fragrance easily overpowered any other scents that may have been mixed with it. But, now that I sniff it again it kinda has a rubber smell too! but it's really, really subtle! If I could rename this stuff, I would call it "hickory-smoked tire". Mmm. sounds delicious!
A great scent this ain't! This is by far the most pathetically-named scent ever created.
I don't know if I should be more disappointed in the scent itself or the "where-in-the-hell-did-that-come-from" name it was given.
Talk about false advertising!
All in all, I wasn't too impressed. They might work for some of you but the scents are far from accurate. And that Creepy Crypt scent...well it needs some work. I still plan to use the "Moldy Morgue" scent in my fog...especially for my graveyard scene, but I doubt I'll be using the "hickory crypt" scent!
For less than $10 it isn't that bad...but then again, it's not very good either!

Hickory-smoked tire. Funny!
Great and helpful review. Thanks.

I suppose the problem is figuring out what scent you'd really want. My guess is that you don't want a scent that actually smells disgusting. I suppose they are having the same problem.
Actually one scent I do like is a musty basement sort of smell. (sort of like my basement actually...) That would add a little character to a haunt but hopefully without being overpowering.
But thanks for the review and trying to describe these scents. Very helpful.

I'll try that tomorrow! Maybe the slightly sweet smell of regular fog mixed with the scent will make a dramatic difference in accurately replicating a "creepy crypt" or "moldy morgue". I'll happily run a second test, and see where that goes... I just wish they smelled more accurate.

~Updated
Well, after running both scents through the fogger, I will say they improved, but not dramatically. The "moldy morgue" scent still smelled of grass, but it was really subtle, I liked it! The other scent; the one that could knock you on your ass with it's extreme hickory smell, has slightly mellowed. It now smells more like bacon? for lack of a better word. I will say that it might* work for a rotisserie-styled cannibal scene (if you have that in your haunt) Well that's somewhat of an improvement, but I still give it a D because it just doesn't mimic the fragrance of what a "dusty-old rotting crypt" should smell like.

Thanks Eyegor! As much as I like the idea of making my haunt (or any place that I haunt) smelling like bacon, this doesn't sound like what we were all hoping it would be. I hope the Morgue smell adds to your haunt this year, though. Thanks again.

Thanks for the update. The final smell surely varies depending on the type of fog juice and the temperature at which it is heated by the fog machine.
I wonder why these companies, such as Sinister Scents, haven't come up with a way to create small samples of their scents. A tiny drop of scent liquid could be placed on a small piece of paper and sealed in a small foil envelope. For five bucks, say, you could order a sampler of any ten scents.
Most home haunters are not able to sample the scents at haunt conventions, and they don't want to waste money purchasing a scent online if they're not sure exactly what it smells like. This seems like a good way for these companies to better market their product to the home haunter crowd.

Agreed Haunter! The booth of Sinister Scents was packed every time I walked by there because it was many people's first opportunity to smell them. I fought my way through and smelled all the ones I was interested in. Verdict: Didn't like any of them. They just didn't work for me. I hear some people love them but I was like meh. Many of them were repulsive (designed to be) but wouldn't work in my neighborhood haunt. Sometimes I think that because I was rushed I didn't give the smells a fair shake and scent packets would great to try them again.
