When I emailed Crayola and complained about the cracking and the many hours of work that was completely destroyed they gave me a coupon for more of the stuff and I believe said that as a solid model (like play-doh) it would work fine with using a lot of water but to cover something it would def crack. It needs to be very thick. Lesson learned. I use claycrete for everything now.

this is the skull before drying

THis is the skull after drying.

I used the paperclay on this porcelain doll and painted it. i forgot to take before pics but it came out well. it was easy to workwith and smoothing it out was easy, just wet your finger tip

LadyAlthea (super awesome demon head & spooky doll, btw)...thanks for the tip about the Elmer's Glue and water...I may try that. It was suggested to me on another forum to also try caulk. I'm going to work on this over the next weekend and I will post back with my findings and pics of the mask as it evolves. From now on I'm going to use paper clay. They have it at the art supply store here.

Dragonomine, was the harder Crayola stuff called "Model Magic?" Someone at another forum said that that style works better than the regular stuff I used for my mask.

I'm going to chime in here and add my two cents...

This products BLOWS! It really sucks. I bought the jumbo "teacher's tub".
No matter what you do, it either cracks or turns brittle. Crayola needs to go back to formula with this stuff.
There is a trick to it though. you have to work it in small amounts, and using aluminum foil as a starting point will save some frustration too!

I use model magic on my masks, it has it's own set of issues but not nearly as pronounced as the air dry garbage.

yup...have to agree...would never buy this stuff again...had the kids test it out and did nothing but crack and chip off large chunks the next day...total garbage.

I bought this stuff once and it promptly went into the trash. I can't stand it. The worst clay I've ever used!
