    Hey all,

I'm planning on showing a horror flick on the TV with the sound off for some background "atmosphere," if you will. I'm not sure, however, which would be best.

I've thought of Blair Witch and Psycho. Not sure if either of those would be really great, though. I'd like to go black and white if possible, but I don't have to... and I'm going for scare, but not gore.

I'm wondering what others have done or what you'd suggest?

Original Creature from the black lagon, and Of couse the 1920's Draula any of the old movie are great for atmosphere. They might not scare much.....but will entertain all those who remember them.

Nosferatu (1922), F.W. Murnau's original vampire classic is without a doubt perfect for what you intend. It was a great movie that started the horror film genre.

Nosferatu is on Netflix Instant watch so if you have the ability to watch using that you can do that. Nosferatu is a great choice and is a silent B&W film. You can also rent from Netflix too

    Dracula w/ Bela Lugosi
    Wolfman w/ Lon Channey
    Frankenstein w/ Boris Karloff

I think I would stick with the classics. Great for atmosphere, if you can't hear all the dialogue you really don't miss anything and the cinematography is amazing to look at if nothing else. I agree with Nosferatu...great flick.

I concur with the silent film theme... these movies were made to be watched without sound so the drama, theatrics and expressions are all amped up a bit

Last year I had Nosferatu, Psycho (B&W), and The Haunting (B&W) playing for ambience. I was going for a haunted old house look so I figured B&W movies would be best.

How about the original Night of The Living dead? That movie is great even w/o sound!

Am I an old and crotchy so-and-so for thinking that when you have company, the TV should be off?

Okay, lets say I wanted to have something on the TV for atmosphere. I'm cool with that as it will be silent.
    So...
If it was me, I would figure a way to make a DVD of classic horror imagery, paintings like "Magic circle", "The scream", "Chronos devours his chidren", "The Triumph of Death", art from horror roleplaying games or classic movie posters...
images fading from to another, like a giant screensaver.

If that were available, I'd buy it for myself.
