i'm starting a jack in the box for a halloween party next year but i'm not really sure what to use on the head of the clown, something that won't make the spring bend over completely. i was thinking paper mache but i'm not sure any suggestions?

You might have better luck if you post this questions in props.

Paper mache should work. But paper mache can get heavy depending on the type and amout of paper and glue you use.

A styrofoam head covered in paint with accessories made out of craft foam might be light weight enough.

Or instead of paper mache you could always use a lightweight plastic ball and attach the spring and accessories with tape and hot glue.

    Or get a bigger spring.
