Okay, after much deliberation I think I have decided to save my Crime Scene theme for NEXT year. I've thought of too many ideas that I'd like to use for it that are too time consuming not to have started earlier. Now that I know what I want to do, I'll be able to plan all this next year and do it right.
Soooo, I scrapped my idea of being Abby from NCIS (my favorite show) and now hubby and I have settled on being Russell Brand & Katy Perry. Hubby has a way of hamming and glamming it up on Halloween, so I think it will be fun. Along those lines, with no real theme going, I'd like to just emphasize a good time and will likely make dancing a big part of the night later on. I'll probably just call the whole thing a Ghostly Gala or Graveyard Gala -- something general.
I'm deliberating on whether to hire a DJ; I think I might do it. As much as I love choosing music, I don't want to be stuck manning the iPod all night like last year, and admittedly a DJ will be much better able to facilitate the evening. The only thing I'm afraid of there is that when the DJ quits, the party will likely quit, and I kind of like the party to have a mind of its own and run its natural course! What do you think, DJ or not?
And to further set the tone for an outrageous evening, I'm very seriously considering hiring some sort of gag stripper -- maybe someone who could come in and mix a bit with the crowd, then break out "stripping" and get the dancing going after the spectacle. I first had the idea when I was going to do the CSI thing -- have a police officer stripper or something like that.
Anyway, we are known for throwing some pretty fun parties and being slightly outrageous and I'd like to have something memorable. We were originally going to hire a band, but thought better of it. Now I don't really have a plan for giving the guests a big WOW, and I thought a funny stripper show might be just the thing. I don't mean REAL stripping -- we're in our 40's with guests ranging from 30 to 55 (most in their 40's like us). Everybody would think something a little risque would be great, but not so raunchy as to land us on the cover of the town paper the next day. Somebody more kitchy or funny, like a tubby or nerdy little guy that does something funny.
Anyone have any ideas? It certainly doesn't have to be stripping -- I just think it would be fun to hire somebody to do something to throw in the element of surprise and outrageousness!

I forgot to add that this party is, for us anyway, huge. We are inviting about 160+ people and we are anticipating a pretty good turnout from that, based on early responses and how it was last year. I think I can safely count on over 100 people, and probably a lot more. For that reason, any entertainment has to be pretty eye-catching and over the top or it will be missed with that many people milling about. That's why I'm so lost -- what will wow over 100 people?
And of course, that's why my brain went to STRIPPER! LOL

I would LOVE to go to a party that had a stripper! I think that's a great idea and perfect for your theme.
You could also consider hiring a fortune teller, not as flashy, but people tend to really have fun with those at parties.

Thank you, HauntedSparks! I was beginning to get a little nervous that maybe the whole stripper idea was a bit overboard.
I have thought about the fortune teller as well. One of my friends (who will be there) reads palms and really gets into it. I think there are other things she does, too, like tarot cards or something. I'll have to ask her about it, thanks!

Not really Halloween related, but my mother hired a gag stripper for my father's 40th birthday years ago, mainly for the sensitive eyes of children (I was 10 at the time) but still pretty funny. It was a woman in a gorilla suit who stripteased and ended up with tassels on the nipples and a little thong bikini over the gorilla suit. Only knew it was a woman when she started talking. And for my cousin's 30th, we had a belly dancer who ended up teaching us ladies and some of the guys how to do it. That was a hoot too. Not sure where one would find people who do these kinds of things, but it is a fun idea. I say go for it!

We're having a fortune teller - but that only really entertains a few people at a time, one having their palm/tarot read and a few to watch. We had one at a big charity event we did and the line was a mile long all night though, so they're popular.
In a previous year we had a shot luge from an ice carver, that went over well. With a large group, you could also consider a "flare" bartender who spins bottles and sets stuff on fire.
I've never seen a gag stripper, so I can't weigh in there
Kudos for the outrageousness though - and for Katy Perry, I strongly suggest her cupcake outfit

What about just a performer in general - fire eating, sword throwing etc?
A great resource is to go to the Kijiji page in your area and see what party services are offered - you could find something really unique and support a local biz too!
