I'm thinking about making cupcakes for my party this year, and potentially to give out to TOT's. I already know I'll probably do ones with black icing on top that say 'trick' in green writing, and orange ones that say 'treat' in black icing.

Thing is, I'd like to literally have a trick or a treat in the middle of each one but I don't want the trick to actually be something nasty, just something unexpected but still edible.

Any ideas? So far I've been thinking of jelly worms/insects, but I'm also not sure if you can bake them into a cupcake, or if they'd have to be inserted afterwards.

I think that gummy worms would be the way to go. Or you could get away with gummy body parts, eyes, although someone might bite into them. Yes, I think that they would have to be inserted. Or you could make bleeding cupcakes - look normal but when one bites into them, they ooze "blood." I did that for work colleagues last year - they eat anything that's left in the kitchen at work. Looked like harmless cupcakes until they took a bite, lol.

Note, that when I had made the "blood," the recipe called for white chocolate chips. Well I added them into the mixture and put a spoonful of mixture in each cupcake. Some of the chips didn't melt completely so when people took bites, not only did the cupcakes ooze blood but the unmelted tiny pieces of white chocolate chips looked like bits of bone/teeth! My husband was the guinea pig to try them first and was so grossed out.

I have a few ideas ...maybe some of these will work:

    broccoli florets
    water chestnuts
    blue cheese chunks
    sweet pickles
    tofu

all safe and nutritious, not to mention the surprised reactions you'll get
"Waiter, there's a hair in my soylent green!"

Any of these would be cool for a party, but you'd be wasting your efforts to make homemade treats for TOTs. I don't know of anyone nowdays that would let their kid eat something homemade unless they knew the person who made them.

Colmmoo.. Those sound just fun!! What is the recipe for your bloody cupcake!! You may concider placing your treat inside a sealed gift bag with a tag on it with your name and addy. then "MAYBE" the parents would let the child eat it..

That's a good point Frankie's Girl I've never had TOT's before, my parents don't celebrate Halloween and this will be my first proper year in my own place with my boyfriend! So I don't even know what the turnout will be in my neighbourhood haha - might be no one to give things to anyway.

Love the ideas guys, and if I do some sort of 'blood' then the white chocolate chips sounds like an awesome idea! Colmmoo, what did you use for blood?

This is the recipe that I used, but I found the one in the second link below today which sounds so much simpler and easier.

I have to agree with Frankie's Girl - I don't let my kids accept homemade treats on Halloween. I'd use that for a party, for sure though!!
