Hi, I am new to this website and have gotten a lot of great ideas from here. But I think I need a little more help. I am planning a very nontraditional baby shower that is a Halloween theme for my sister.
She is not a traditional person so the cutesy “lil pumpkin” theme is not going to cut it but yet I didn’t want to go too crazy so that all kinds of guest could enjoy it without thinking we are too morbid. (I’ve read some post where one girl posted something similar with a rosemary’s baby theme and other guest on the forum totally went off on her on how inappropriate it was for having this kind of shower and if they received an invitation there is no way they would go! - I don’t want that!)
After many hours of trying to come up with something I decided on a theme of “Witches and Warlock Ball Honoring the Newest Little Warlock”. I am encouraging my guest to show up in some sort of witches/warlock costume. I am turning my garage into a witches den complete with a witches kitchen etc. I also have about 2 acres of land that I am turning into a haunted woods & at the end is a big bonfire that I am calling the witches ceremonial pit or something like that.
Here is the kicker, I live about 30 minutes away from most people and I want to make sure they actually show up (for some reason I have had a hard time getting people to come to my parties! When I lived in NYC that was never a problem & always had tons of guest but since I moved to Nashville I’ve noticed people just aren’t as sociable) So I started with the invites thinking if I have an unusual invitation it might just strike people’s curiosity and lure them to actually show up.
Instead of a normal paper invite I created an invite package. My guest will receive a small box that includes a 1 oz glass corked vial of spell ingredients in a burlap draw string sack with tiny skull and cross bones beads on the end of the drawstrings. Next to the spell bottle I made a “spell book” complete with instructions on what to do with the spell (a healthy baby boy spell) and ingredients with the party details. All this is laying in a bed of moss with a few spiders and bugs. (I will post pics once it is completed)
Now, after all the work that went in to the invitation I don’t want to fall short of the party. I need a WOW factor that fits in with the theme. I thought about having a witches hunt in the haunted woods and have people collect items for a spell, like one small bat, red devil eyes, etc. the team/person who has the most ingredients in the shortest amount of time wins. I think I am also going to play “tempt your fate” game that one member on this forum introduced. The game sounds awesome! I also thought about hiring a tarot card reader or psychic to give readings at this party. Other than that I am stumped.
I need to learn more about witches and maybe that would help. I also need help with coming up with things that would be in a Witches woods to place in this haunted trail that leads to a ceremonial fire pit. Also, something by the fire pit to give that ceremonial feel.
Sorry to be so wordy here but I was hoping all you awesomely creative people could give me some more direction on what I can do to give this party a wow factor and to possibly get these nashvillians to leave their homes! Thanks!

For the fire pit (Assuming you are actually going to have a fire burning) this could be very cool. I picked up some of this for our backyard fire pit this summer and it was a lot of fun. It's called "Funky Colored Flames" and you just throw the packet into the fire and it changes the colour of the fire! It says the colour lasts up to 30 minutes - I wasn't timing it, but it was definitely longer than I expected. That could be awesome for your ceremonial fire section of the haunted trail.
I got it for 99 cents at Canadian Tire, so think DIY stores or Hardware stores - presumably anywhere that you can get marshmallow roasting sticks, fire pits or camping supplies.
