We throw an adult halloween party every year, but now that my friends are all having kids (including us) i thought maybe this year we'd have a kids one as well.

Anyone have any experience with this??? what do you do? do you do it on halloween night? how long does it go for?

any suggestions, tips, ideas would be great!
    thanks in advance!

Ibelle...we do the same...we have an adults only party on the 30th and then a very casual kiddo party on halloween night. Works out well b/c we usually rent a margarita machine for the adults and have it the next night as well...we plan a few games for the kids - spider leg ring toss, pin the nose on the pumpkin and order pizza and have some type of fancy juice drinks for the kids, serve them in test tubes, which they get a kick out of. We also plan a little craft project of some sort,(last year we got a ton of foam stickers and let them decorate small pumpkins that they could take home) and then also include trick or treating in the neighborhood later in the evening. Our kids and our friends kids have really gotten a kick out of it.

I saw this at my son's kindergarten party... raisins in clear cups of Sprite. It's very cool how they rise up from the bottom to the top as the bubbles surround them. Not sure what H'weeney effect it's trying to simulate, but cool nonetheless.
Go classic this year. Choose decorations only from...

Kids love a Haunted Room. You can just set up props throughout. It could be a mad scientist lab with lots of jars and specimans. Have them touch, feel and taste some gross things. Kids usually love this. Spaghetti for brains, peeled grapes for eyeballs, broken up uncooked Ramen noodles for maggots, etc. The list is limitless. Do a search online for sites that give great ideas and pictures.

Dance to the Monster Mash, etc.

Dollar Tree has some great kids sound effect CDs every year. I also just found three good CDs there that were with all the other CDs not just in for Halloween. They also have the grow a brain and grow a snake in the toy section.

I filled a lot of my witches jars last year from DT and Dollar General clearance shelves. I just looked to see what they had and came up with a new name for them based on what they resembled.

I have a parent/child Halloween party every year and it works out great. I have activities for the kids like pumpkin carving, hay rides, costume contests and scavanger hunts. The kids have their own buffet of sweet treats and I have a Boo Bar set up separately for the adults with wines, cheeses and fruits. Then we have a fire going with brunswick stew brewing in a cast iron kettle to serve anyone who wants it in small hollowed-out pumpkins. It works because the kids are busy doing their own thing and their parents are socializing without being interrupted, but the parents can get involved in the activities if they want. Usually they help with the pumpkin carving. My daughter hosts the costume contest and my husband drives the hay rides. We start just before dusk and it goes on til people leave, usually after 2-3 hours. The age range is 5 yrs to 9 yrs. It has been very successful for 4 years now. I'm in the process of planning my 5th one now.
    Try it....everyone has a blast!

With young children, does this wrap up around 9 or so, then? We are thinking of doing the same thing...having kids and adults...but we know it would have to end early (which is fine with me!)

You could call it "Bubblin' Bedbug Brew" and scare the heck out the parents, too.

We tried this yesterday with Sprite and generic raisins. It didn't work. They just sat at the bottom and bubbled some. Did I do something wrong?
