Try going over to instructables.com, that's where I find most of my inspiration for party favors. They always have some sort of simple, quick things to make. My personal favorite is a cartoon I saw on another site: A hand shaped paddle with an eyeball shaped and painted rubber ball attached to it by a rubber band. It reminded me of those $1 items I got as a kid.

This year is the first year we are having a real party. Last year we had an open house on Halloween and gave all kinds of treats to the kids. Full sized candy bars, glow sticks, play dough, pretzels, stickers, tattoos. We don't get a lot of kids, so we could afford to it. This year we are having an open house, so we will have a candy buffet for the kids and adults. We will also have games, so we will have assorted prizes for the kids

i always have party favors for when guests leave. but i hand it to them as they say good bye. otherwise i think some people may feel odd just taking one...even though thats what they're there for.
i usually put them in the brown paper lunch bags with some kind of decor on the front (one year i put body parts from a doll on there...with blood of course). anyhow, inside i usually put a little water bottle and some asprin (for the morning hangover), some chocolate (because everyone loves chocolate), gum or mints, and something fun like the red fortune fish we used to play with as kids or one year i made cootie catchers, or i'll put bad fortunes in each one.
only one year did i make caramel apples for people to take home. but i went to one party last year where the hostess make bags like i make....and i loved having my water and chocolate on the way home.
just some ideas

Party favors... –

ibelle3, MM1 and GV - Great ideas all!!
I have not been nearly as creative - BUT i do provide a take-away as you leave party favor at the end of the night... Usually a little plastic party pumpkin candy holder - or those little paper/plastic goody bags that come with twistie ties. I find them in multi-packs at Dollar Tree or other party supply stores.
The adults seem to enjoy getting a little kiddie style treat - as if they have just finished making one HUGE trick-or-treat stop at our house.
I put a Halloween pencil, a small toy, and a little bit of traditional candy (mini-chocolate bar, Sweet tart smartie roll, Tootsie Pop, fire ball jawbreaker, box of raisins...that sort of thing) I tie it all up with a ribbon or piece of twine - add a sticker or a small skelly - and voila! I have even tucked a note inside that reads something like:
"You escaped this time - but next year - you won't be so lucky! BOO!"
or a silly joke or one-liner (google "Halloween Kids jokes" and you will get a ton! Make copies and cut out small strips of the sayings, etc. to put in goody bags.
I usually enlist the help of two or three high school kids to manage the party - so they enjoy putting the goody items together - and then handing them out as people leave.
Love all your ideas. Make mine look a bit less fancy - but hey, it's all about the fun, right?! BOO!" TO SERVE MAN " ... IT'S A COOKBOOK!"

I usually burn CD's every year with some of my favorite seasonal songs. Monster Mash, Purple People Eater, Thriller, etc... I've had people forget to pick one up as they leave and call me to see if I had any left because they really wanted one. I title the CD HallowSkeen's Musical Madness and then the year. Everyone seem's to like them.

I am LOVING the halloween music CD as a party favor idea! I just finished creating my playlist for the party, so how simple to make a bunch to give-away. Hopefully people will enjoy the music enough that they want to take it home. I guess we'll find out - thanks for all the great ideas!

Love the idea of a water bottle & aspirin! I have always wanted to do beer coozies. I even ordered multiple colors & planned to print fun Halloween graphics on the with iron on transfer paper. Just haven't completed the project.
Last year I did little goody bags with candy & misc toys I got at Target on after Halloween clearance the year before (themed bouncy balls, pencils, trinkets). The problem is I always forget to give them to people & a lot get left behind.
