Thought of skeletons wearing hula skirts and leis and found these napkins maybe you could get some ideas from these. http://tikizone.stores.yahoo.net/haskluandtip.html

I'm thinking maybe message in a bottle invite, but the ones I have seen are too small. I would like to find bottles large enough to put the usual beach type stuff (umbrella, etc) but I want to put in little plastic skeletons too. (it is a HAUNTED luau, after all! ) Does anyone know where I can get bottles that would be big enough?

The ones at specialtybottle.com are really nice but they're out of stock on the ones I like I did find some large ones at Oriental Trading that have a removable bottom, so that might work. I also found some cute halloween drink umbrellas online that I could put in there. Now I need to think about the actual wording for the invitations. Once again, mental block, Ugh!

I have seen some mini skull and bones garland at Dollar Tree. Transform into shrunken heads and put the party info on little scrolls attached with string. Send or deliver in a small hemp drawstring bag (need a mini bubble wrap envelope I suppose) that could have an old "world map" graphic on the outside - sort of an expedition/safari treatment. I can see it...can you? BOO!

Are you mailing them? If you are dropping them off how about Tiki masks/totems? And you could invite people to a sacrifice or to tossing someone in a volcano.

I'm picturing orange-and-black or all-black flower leis...raffia table skirts that are tattered and spray painted black. If you could find a toy (rubber or plastic) pig and stuff an apple in its mouth for a centerpice. Maybe replace the eyes with glowing red or green eyes would be creepy.
You could hang some of those colorful hawaiian paper lanterns around and put pumpkin lights inside (the color-changing ones are good for this) along with little plastic spiders and cover them with spider webbing and add some more spiders to the outside - as if they've been there a Looong time.
Last summer for a luau I built a paper mache volcano and placed one of those mini fogger units inside to create volcanic steam along with some red LED lights - cool effect. And how about hanging a fishing net along with the usual starfish and shells but adding something special like skulls and bones and spiders...
