Here's two great baking projects that I found while surfing the Halloween blogs:
Melting Head Cake & Eyeball Cupcakes
I pretty sure I remember seeing eyeballs like that at Target last year I think. Pretty sure they were gummy candies.

I just LOVE the melting head cake!! Especially in the shots of it melting. Very realistic and now I know what I will be serving for dessert!!! <Insert delighted scream here>

for one who likes to bake and make cakes, I was wondering if I was able to do this myself, but I doubt my ability to do so.

Nowhining remember this: "Never doubt, just experiment. Now THAT is the spice of life!" I used it as part of my Halloween party last year.

I agree with Gorey Vidal. Cooking or baking is something that you learn by just doing. Back in my 20s I sat down with a cookbook and deboned a whole duck. Seemed impossible for someone who had never done it before or really cooked before but I took my time and followed the directions and it turned out pretty good.
If you can, try making it once before when you want to serve it. When it's something that feeds a lot and you live alone and could never eat all that yourself, then try scaling it back and making a smaller version. The practice of just assembling it once ahead of time will help work out any problems that might occur first time out. Pick a Saturday or Sunday afternoon when you have a time do it without feeling rushed. If your focus and apprehension is on the assembly part then save yourself sometime and buy a prepared unfrosted cake to use for the base (a frozen pound cake, like Sara Lee's, might work well).
BTW ALWAYS assemble all of your ingredients ahead of time. Have things cut or measured ahead of time when possible. Pull out all of your measuring cups, cooking utensils, etc. that you will need. Prep is time consuming and you don't want to be looking for things in your frig or cabinets when something is melting or burning on your stove and that's where your attention needs to be at the time. Worst thing is needing something like vanilla and finding out you don't have it or don't have enough.
Enjoy. I love cooking and baking (right now my kitchen is in a remodel so it's been a while) but it feels great to assemble something you made yourself and pushed your skills a little.
I love Barbara Jo's blog because she takes you through so much of how she experimented with things.
