Since my party this year will be held the saturday before halloween - on the 30th - I thought I should come up with something 'special' for my guests to celebrate the arrival of Halloween at midnight!
I've been trying to come up with ideas, but all I've got so far is:
Lights suddenly go out at midnight (my hubby at the breaker box) followed by some paranormal occurrence such as the appearance of an apparition - maybe a projected ghost with some unearthly greetings.
OR
The 50" TV which has sat dark and dormant in the corner all evening suddenly blares to life (preset timer) with some incredibly spooky image with a message (big scream tv DVD?)
OR
A hired actor (or bribed friend) crashes the party in some unimaginably scary costume and proceeds to frighten the snot out of everyone there.
These are okay, but I would love to hear any other ideas you all may have. I love spooky/creepy but I am not a big fan of gore, and do not really want to make anybody feel physically threatened by anything at my parties. Thanks in advance for any input! You HF people are amazing!
P.S. I saw a leaf fall today - yay!

We did something similar to spice up the party one year. We had a friend that couldn't get to the party until late make a grand entrance. At 11:00, the front door burst open and a maniac (our friend) with a cheap mask and hoodie came running through the house with a real chainsaw (blade removed for safety). He ran into the great room and kitchen area, revved the saw a few times and then exited through the back door. He was only in the house for less than 30 seconds to avoid giving anyone carbon monoxide poisoning. I swear one of the guests wet himself and just about everyone screamed. It was a great prank.

We had a guest leave (quietly) & come back dressed in a totally wild get up. Strolled right on in & we had no idea who he was. The "mystery guest" had us freaked out for a while before he revealed himself. Guess you could have someone do that but maybe go all out on the dramatic part (ie....chainsaw). Be sure & post what u did & how it turned out!

I always wanted to do something like this. i came up with this for last year, but opted no to do it. still like the idea though. but its more of a game than a surprise:
Kind of like New Years. When guests arrive or at some point in the party you give your guests a piece of paper that would have some kind of halloween character on there (cat, owl, ghost, wolf, etc). they could read it but not share it with anyone. THen at 10 seconds before midnight you guys would countdown like for new years . then at midnight the lights would go out and everyone would have to act out their character. now its like marco polo. so everyone has to find their "match" (because you only made 2 of each). once everyone is paired up, you turn on the lights and that pair would have to kiss like bringing in the new year. not all crazy or anything...it would just be for a laugh because some guys would be paired up with guys.
we just never did this because our place is tiny and we didnt want people knocking down our tv, computer, or candles.
i still like the idea though

Ask a group of teenagers to dress as zombies and stagger through your house as a zombie invasion. They can give out jelly brains as they stagger through.
