This year for my niece who is 11 is going to be having a Halloween party and most of the 5th grade will be there. I am putting together a haunted trail for them to go on like one I did about 4 years ago for my other niece. Anyhow, kids will be put into groups of about 8 or so and will be guide on the trail 1 group at a time. My mom is going to be dressed up kinda like the story teller from Universal Horror nights a couple of years ago and will be telling the next group of kids a story while they wait for their time to go on the trail. What I am needing is a story to tell. I suck at coming up with a scary story and was wondering if there is someone on here that might be willing to help.

It might help if we knew what kinds of things are on your trail
"We accommodate the living, but who shall accommodate the dead?"
"We say haunted, but we mean the house has gone insane."

Not knowing the scenes you plan to incorporate makes it difficult, but I'll give it a go.
Two hundred years ago, this very evening, a strange and terrible thing happened in these woods. It was a night just like this that a group of weary travelers stopped here to rest for the night. Little did they know the horrors that awaited them. Tired and hungry from walking a great distance, they set up camp, while a few of them began to search for food and water.
Wandering along this trail, they found no food. They tried to find their way back, but fog had hidden their footsprints and they became hopelessly lost. The rest of the group began to become concerned for their friends safety. SUDDENLY (host shouts) screams could be heard coming from deep along the trail. The group ran in search of their friends, calling their names.
They found nothing at first, but soon became enshrouded in an unearthly fog. As they tried to keep to the trail, they stumbled over a tangled, wet heap on the ground. It was a fresh skeleton. Yes, it was one of the ones that had gone looking for food. Not knowing what to do, they began to panic. Sounds filled the air around them. Screams, moans and wailing chilled the air and they froze in their tracks. Slowly, one by one, each would scream and disappear into the gloom. Tearing and ripping sounds mingled with the sounds of moans and gnashing teeth. The few remaining began to run for their lives. Eventually, only one made it out of these woods. When she was found the next morning, all she could do was shake, moan and say "there was evil along the trail, there was evil along the trail." The villagers thought she was mad, but only she knew the truth of what lay in wait along the trail through these evil woods.
It is said that the sounds of screams and the mysterious fog return from time to time, but every one hundred years it all comes back. The terror, the sounds and whatever evil lurked along that trail RETURN WITH A VENGANCE! (Shout again for emphasis). Tonight marks 200 years since those terrible things have happened. Tonight, you, yes you, will need to venture along the trail to find out what happened to those tortured souls on that fateful night, exactly 200 years ago.
Well, that was my stream of consciousness idea. Feel free to use any or part of it if it will help. You can add in details based upon planned scenes, or just let their minds fill in the blanks until they go through themselves.

It's going to be random things throughout the trail like zombies, witches, chainsaw guy, ect. so was just needing something general. What Wolfbeard gave is is good, I might have to change a couple of words here and there to fit better to the surroundings but that shouldn't be a problem. If anyone else has something too feel free to let me hear it and I might be able to combine some of them.

Back in the days when witch hunts were popular, an accused gave a curse, that whosoever came upon this land, dead or alive, went crazy???? lol

And the inmates were just coming off of their meds. A truck driver stopped to see what was happening and they stole his truckload of Halloween costumes and used them as disguises and now they are hiding in the woods(Some of them say their friends in the UFO will be picking them up but they will need to capture some other normal humans as payment for the ride in the UFO.)

"Storytelling" –

Open for house tours every night of the year, I get alot of practise telling "stories".
Some nights I'm in better "Voice" than other nights, feeling more control ,
Recently as I put the finishing line on my long story, a young woman gasped!
"I have never heard a story like that before!"
Guess what boys and girls?
It is All True. No fiction told here.
I may get theatrical in the telling sometimes and I usually add some attempted humor to make it more user-friendly for the timid in the room. I am not trying to scare or create phobias for anyone.
Maybe if I tell the story for another 9 years , that certain unknown someone who may have some answers just might come walking through the door to explain things to me.
I can only hope, and keep the incidents alive.. through storytelling."My Insanity is well-respected, until they wiggle free and become a stringer for a tabloid"

I would use "true" ghost stories from local lore. Go the Barnes & Noble and pick up The Stories of Haunted (Your State) or related books. Virginia has awesome ghost legends. Like, the stories of horrific and tragic deaths are true and historically documented. The question is, is there really a ghost?
