I like to have something unusual for guests to experience. One year I got an Absinthe drip, with real, imported Absinthe. And, so the non-drinkers could have a trippy experience too, I ordered Miracle Fruit from Eden Gourmet. These little berries alter your sense of taste for a while, so bitter food tastes sweet. Lemons, brussel sprouts, Guiness beer for the drinkers--we had a whole tray for people to taste test! The only catch is, it will make ordinary drinks sickly sweet for awhile, so you have to time it. (Also, they're expensive--from $1.50 - $3 each.)

    Okay, that sounds awesome.
Question, though. I'm intrigued by Absinthe, but it's so bloody expensive I haven't been able to try it. What exactly is an Absinthe Drip?

I'm going to have to look into that Miracle Fruit, as well. Sounds like fun.

The drip is the fountain. There's a picture of one in my profile pics. They sell a plastic one that's fairly cheap, or you can invest in a glass one. Absinthe is really strong, so you just pour a little in the bottom of a glass. Then you place a slotted spoon over it, with a sugar cube on top, and turn the spigot on to let ice water drip down. It melts the sugar, and dilutes the drink. Supposedly the milky green waves you see in the glass are the Absinthe fairy!
There's a cool Absinthe forum where I got background info.

I got a bottle of Lucid Absinthe as a gift. You can find that online from $50 and up. If you make it to a Colorado Make 'n Take (and I remember to bring the bottle and sugar cubes) you can try some.

Ooo... Hauntiholik, you are far too kind! Thanks. I'll PM you about the Make n' Takes.

The original product was poison and killed those who drank very much of it at all, as it etched marks in the marble bar in the Absinthe Tavern in New Orleans. (1870?)
