this is my second party and last time I did not do a game. How do games usually go over? My crowd is all in their 30's. I will have about 30 or so people. I am considering Tempt you Fate since it is optional and buy a ouija board if anyone is interested.
I would love some feedback. Also, did you give out party favors?
Hey Shannon,
My party crowd is a little younger (20 - 30 + 40 yr old), but I don't think age matters if they're fun loving. If they're more reserved, you may want to consider enhancing the opportunities to chat or be entertained (i.e. nothing too interactive). If they are atleast willing to jump into a game, then they can make your night (they made ours)!
The games for our party this year were Tempt Your Fate (with balloons), costume contest, killer winking game and a CSI-type game. While the costume contest is self-explanatory, the rest may need some details.
You know Tempt Your Fate, so I won't explain. I will say that it's great because you can guage your "fates" by your guests. Your boss and his wife coming over, a bad fate may be much tamer than if it's with your drinking buddies. I have my list of fates if you want them, they are a bit wild though (nobody at our party was offended or refused).
The killer winking game requires victim cards and 1 killer card to be made and handed out to guests at arrival. The killer should be random. The killer's job is to kill everyone at the party without being found out. He/she kills by winking at people throughout the night. To keep the killer from being found immediately, the victim must wait a little bit to die. The victims' cards all detail how the will "die". Once again, you can tune this to your crowd. Make it crazy or civilized (crazy is much more fun). At our party, if there was a single survivor, he/she won a prize basket. If the killer killed everyone, the killer won the prize basket. If there were multiple survivors, they all received small prizes. This encouraged survivors to keep their suspicions of the killer's identity to themselves, lest they lose their chance at a basket.
Our CSI game required a bit more work. We built a crime scene in our garage and each person was given 2 minutes and a notepad to write down anything of importance in their opinion. After they were done, they could formulate a story while others were investigating. Once everyone was done (and enough time was allowed for the last few people to formulate), one by one they came to the front and told what happened. The funniest, craziest, most clever (or all of the above) wins.
Let me know if you want any other info. What's mine is yours (on these forums, that is ).
Oh, and we didn't give out party favors, but we were pretty generous with our prizes. Pretty much anyone who wanted one got one. The baskets were reserved for particular winners though.
Thank you so much! I think I will stick with the TyF and costume contest this year just to see how many people get involved with that. I would love have your list of fates if you are still willing to share. My group is pretty crazy, but there will some I don't know that well.
Also any suggestions for prizes would be helpful. I only have a few days left to shop!! Yikes!
We set up our fates sort of like fortune cookies. We thought just reading "you win a prize" was kinda boring, so we added quotes to each. Here they are:

Our prizes were candy, some cheap Halloweenie stuff from walmart and "homemade" dvds. Old horror classics and some brand new stuff. We also had 2 baskets for winners of our bigger games. They were some old, rustic type baskets with spider web filling (like grass for easter baskets). We put in a bottle of wine. Wine quality depends on your guests (we had Boone's farm, haha). We also included a few bigger candies and some Halloween votive candle holders.
One idea I thought of after my party this year (that I plan to try next year) is a prize store. Instead of just handing out prizes, guests will earn tickets or tokens or something that they can spend at a store. Kind of hearkens back to school days... I don't know how that will work for you. It works great with my plan to have a twisted carnival theme.
Anyway, good luck and I'd be happy to help with any questions.
