First off, props to Yellow_Moon, whose idea I blatantly stole, but it matched what I was looking for perfectly! Full pix are here (Halloween Party 2009 - kimandmatt's Photos) but I've included a few select ones in this post.

    Here was the invite:

So I dressed up as Thaddeus Carlyle, archeologist, and my wife dressed up as the Octo-Mummy (you know, Octomom...Octomummy...)!

I made up a mummy and decorated the basement as a crypt:

My wife did some fantastic food (unfortunately I didn't get any pix of the spread ), plenty of drink, and lots of fun. I did several things for entertainment:
    • Halloween slideshow on the bigscreen tv (photos from past parties, and from the internet)
    • Halloween music - both classic halloween songs as well as good dancing music
    • A version of the "winking murderer" game that I really went all out on. I printed up a bunch of cards with various rules for the humans and for the mummies. We started with one mummy who could "infect" others at the party. They could potentially defend themselves with a card they drew. If they couldn't, then they too became a mummy. There were a few cards that would let them kill the mummy (torch and magnifying glass) but most just let them escape ("Throw the grad student in the way", "whip", "heiroglyphic spell"). This game went on throughout the party.

    • I layered different funny objects inside the mummy as I was wrapping it (car keys, a sock, photos of various "lost" objects and people) and made a big deal as I was unwrapping it, describing how the Egyptians would mummify, and that they often put fake death masks on the body. I had printed out pictures of various people and put them under layers of cloth as "death masks" and revealed them. The final one was Michael Jackson. All of this got a pretty good laugh. Finally, the last layer revealed a scroll of heiroglyphs that had a curse on it. Everyone was cursed!

    • To break the curse, I had two buckets of "curse breakers," one tame and one racy (and labelled as such). It was completely voluntary, but most people took a curse breaker. This was essentially the "dare" game. The tame curse breakers were things like: drink a shot of <mystery drink>, make up a halloween haiku, and other things (many of which I got from this forum). The racy ones included: being spanked by a random person at the party, getting handcuffed to someone for 15 minutes, being a slave to someone at the party for 15 minutes, do something naughty to a banana (this one got chosen twice), read aloud a steamy passage from a romance novel , and so on. Did I mention this as an adult party with alchohol?

    • Costume contest with prizes. We get a bunch of $5-$10 prizes (cheap DVDs, starbucks cards, small photo frames, halloween tshirts, halloween glasses) and my wife and I make up prize categories on the fly. This year I also made up several "Golden Zombie" trophies for the top categories:

    • Finally, as the party began to wind down, we played some games of "Cthulhu Worshipper" which is just like the game Werewolves (everyone is a villager except one werewolf) except with a different theme.

{If you couldn't tell, I'm a game designer, so making up or modifying games is second nature. I've also spent years doing Live Action Roleplaying games, so I have a lot of props and enjoy putting on events like this).

In the end, we had folks over til about 1:30 or 2:00am. No spills, no drama, nothing broken! We did have a ton of left over food and drink though.

Anyway, even though I didn't have as many people show up as I hoped (over 100 Evites sent out, only 20 RSVPed - people have really gotten rude about RSVPing) I'd say we had 25 to 30 people over the course of the evening. Not as big as past parties, but the house was more decorated and the overall party was, I think better, than past parties.

I am eager now for next weekend to go to someone else's party and let them do all the work and cleanup afterwards. I'm eager to see more pix of parties from folks on here. Thanks for all of the great ideas and help that people here have offered - not sure yet if I'll do a party again next year, but if I do, I'll be here again looking for more stuff!

Great detail on your party. And thank you so much for posting this.

I used to teach history (ancient civilizations) and I bought a ton of Egypt posters and props. I had no idea what to do with them until your post.
