Our 2nd annual Halloween party is Saturday the 24th and I wanted to share our plan to get any feedback or suggestions. I am adding a lot (games, costume contest, and prizes) so I want to make we got it right.
When guests arrive, to get everyone chatting with people they don't know, I am having an Ice breaker game. I did something similar at a Valentine's day party I threw and it worked out great. I am going to tape a Halloween Character (for ex. Dracula and Frankenstein) to everyone's backs. They have to ask people (someone other than whom they came with) yes or no questions to try to figure out who they are. Once they figure out who they are I am going to give them little door Prizes that they can pick out of a pillow case. (Nothing big mostly dollar store glow stick necklaces and masks.)
I am having everyone bring fingers foods and beer/liquor. I am making little smokies and Nacho Cheese Dip and a Red Devil (red velvet) cake. I am also making a punch with a frozen Jello hand to float in it and Hot apple cider. I will also provide wine. Last year we did this and we ended up with a huge spread of food that all got inhaled.
For entertainment we are going to have the game Rockband going on in the basement and have the basement all discoed out and upstairs with be for people who just want to chat and listen to music. Our office will have a green Zombie theme and we will have our two computers set up with the game left for dead in case anyone wants to take a break to kill some Zombies.
Outside we will have a firepit going and some food for smores.
For the costume contest we are having people vote in three categories, Most Origianl and/or Best overall, Scariest, and Funniest. The party starts at 8 and I will begin tallying up the votes around 10:30. We'll announce around 11pm. For prizes I made movie baskets. Each basket contains 2 bottles of Coke, 2 packages of Popcorn, movie candy like milk duds, dots, and mike and ikes etc. Each basket has two horror movies. I got them really cheap at a discount store for like 3 bucks each. They didn't have a great selection, and the movies seem like they are probably pretty crappy, but isn't that a fun part about this time of year, watching crappy scary movies as well as good ones? Regardless, I think it's funny. I also got some ceramic Tombstomes from the dollar store which I am going to spray paint metallic gold for the trophies.
For decortations we set out tombstones that we made last year for a cemetary in our front lawn. This year we added a green spotlight on it and it makes the house seem very eerie with the green glow. Last year we bought a fog machine that did not work so well in the hous, so were are going to put it outside if it doesn't rain. We'll see how that works.
Overall this is our plan. If any experts have any suggestions, I am open to feedback or criticism. I really want this party to be a huge success.

I think your party sounds like it will be wonderful!!! Can I come?
Love the fire pit/smores idea. I wish we could do that here without freezing our butts off. I may have to borrow your gold tombstone trophy idea too! I've been looking for cheap trophy ideas, but everything I've found is either too expensive or just cheap and cheesy. Good luck with the party, I'm sure it will be a success!

Sounds awesome! The fog machine comment reminded me of the first year we tried the fog machine in the house. It set off our fire alarm and when the alarm company called they got a good laugh when we told them why the alarm went off.
Note to others... be warned about fog machines in the house!

Sounds like a great party! I love the movie basket prizes. I have a lot of those movies and had the same idea about this being the season for it. I was feeling like they were not enough, so I am going to steal your movie basket idea! Thanks
I also love the trophy idea.
I would love to attend your party. Have fun and be sure to take photos and share with us. I forgot to take many last year!
