This year, I was hosting a Halloween party for my son's scout group. I recently saw the movie "Red Riding Hood" and I got an idea for a spooky story to tell them.
-------------------------
The gist of the story was that I was shopping at a garage sale a few months back and this real old lady was selling all kinds of weird things: dusty old books, old silver candlesticks, old cookware, etc, then I spied an old leather box sitting on the shelf behind her. She quickly responded that the box was not for sale. I was intrigued, and I pressed the matter. Finally after offering fifty dollars she agreed to let me have it, but warned that it was cursed. She then told me the history behind it:
About 200 years ago, there was a woodcutter who lived in Romania. Every day he would leave his village and treck to the forest where he would cut wood to sell and to heat his small home. Back then, they would carry their lunch in a home made wooden or leather box, usually consisting of bread and cheese.
One evening he stayed out a little later than he should. His wife would start worrying so he needed to head back. Besides, there's no telling what creatures lurked in the dark forrests of Romania. So, the woodcutter was about to head home when SUDDENLY, he was attacked by a werewolf. But he was a strong woodcutter, and he fought back viciously. With his axe, he managed to cut off the werewolf's front paw. After which, the werewolf turned an leaped back into the forrest. The woodcutter then picks up the paw and drops it into his empty box to show the townsfolk back home.
The woodcutter hurrys home to see his wife. Surely she would be both terrified of his story, yet relieved he survived. When he enters his home and calls out to her. She does not answer from the kitchen, so he turns to the bedroom. He then sees his wife lying in bed. However, she's not sleeping. He quickly spies her arm which is bleeding right above where the hand used to be. He quickly opens the box and discovers the wolfs paw has reverted back to human form- his wife's!
-------------------------
.
I made this rather quickly. Just modified a box I had, put a partition in the middle, two lids, hot-glued pleather all over it. Glued purple fabric in each bottom. Touched up seems/joints with brown/black paint. It worked out pretty well during my story. You just have to remember which side has which hand. I tried to inconspiciously flip it over as I was re-enacting the woodcutter walking back home.
