Where's the line between funny or scary and offensive?

I am widely considered to be one of the most offensive by most of my friends in my regular everyday speech but sometimes this Halloween stuff can be a bit much. As far as decor, the hangman out side at least to me is offensive, it's different if it's inside somewhere among friends or accompanied by a backstory but to just hang it there?--Not so much. As far as costumes goes, I had a male friend dressed as a dominatix a few years back which I thought was HILARIOUS! the falice costumes, or the breathalyzer with the cleverly place blow hole that we've all seen at Spirit are to me VERY offensive. Thoughts? I would be very curious to see if anyone had ever turned someone away from their party because of their costume.

Most of my friends don't bother to dress up LOL so no. I doubt I would TBH, all my friends are adults so if they find that funny then whatever.

There are certain things I would never have in my haunt because I consider them offensive...for example a hanging man. I would never have one in my haunt, it's just not my taste. To me things like that are just...I think that image is very graphic. It might be because I knew someone who killed himself that way. I'd also never have guts and gore in my haunt, to me those things aren't really "Hallowe'eny". To me Hallowe'en is more about mystery and subtlety than it is about "OMG look, a prop with its guts hanging out." Just personal taste of course.

I agree with Lea, its all about personal preference. Some like the shock value and sudden scare, others like the gore, and others like the cute "Kiddie" decore. Its all about what you like about Halloween and being willing to share it with others. As in my area not many people even give out candy let alone decorate thier yards. Anyone willing to bring back the spirit of Halloween is doing the right thing, no matter what thier taste.
