My son is with my ex this year for Halloween, and shes a lump and does nothing fun, so we've decided to throw a halloween party for my son and stepson and their friends from school/scouts.

My wife and I already have a slew of ideas, but thought I'd post here and see if anyone's thrown a great party for 2nd graders and had some cool ideas we may have missed?

I've thrown a few Halloween sleepovers for my litte brothers back in the day. We played games like Mummy Wrap (teams of 2 ~ one wraps the other in TP). Then as soon as that was done, we played 'Who can pick up the TP the fastest' LOL. Another game was 'Pin the nose on Jack' (I drew a great big ole JOL on a poster board and then cut out triangle noses from black construction paper). We've done a Halloween pinata (outside of course), 'Musical Monster Mash' (musical chairs to the Monster Mash song). Altough all the games got loads of laughs, I think the one the kids liked the most was the pumpkin hunt. I got a bunch of those little plastic pumpkin pails (the ones you fit a couple of pieces of candy in) and I hid them all over the yard. Each kid came with a flashlight of their own and they searched for the pumpkins in the dark. They LOVED it. You could also have some spooky music playing too.

One year at our party, its was for kids from 5-12 we did,pin the wart on the witch, bobbing for apples, and Tragic Sam. The kids had to feel various items out of paper bags while I told a scary story and they had to guess which body part it was. They loved that one the most. There are several versions on the web.

Awesome idea on Tragic Sam - I forgot about that, thanks... I also came across this version online which is pretty cool too...

    Scary Halloween Story
Supplies: a. Two Olives for eyes
    b. Wire Frames from old glasses (optional)
    c. Cooked cold spaghetti- intestines
    d. Cold oiled dirty plastic – skin
    e. Un-Popped Popcorn (10-15) – teeth
    f. Dried apricot – ear
    g. Cold oiled fur – hair
    h. Cold wet Tofu or round sponge – brains
    i. Glove with wet sand. Drape over bowl, and freeze – Hands
    j. Have plastic bowls prepared with each item.

Have all the kids sit in a circle with the “narrator”. Turn out the lights. Narrator reads scary Halloween story with a flashlight shining on their face only, then as you start reading begin passing around the body parts that correlates with that part of the story. FYI – It helps to have the items lined up in proper order and have an assistant ready before the lights go out.

Here lies John, my dear late lamented friend.
I know he wished he could be here before the end.
John was a fun man, a giving man too.
He wanted to share his body parts with you.

John was a jolly man with a great big gut.
Let’s pass around his intestines, just your luck!
Fresh from the grave, wet and cold
Just a little slimy, just a little old.
Twisted and shriveled in a bunch
Just like they were after his lunch.
    (Pass cold cooked spaghetti)

His skin was fair, almost pure white
Let’s pass around a piece, no need to fright.
Fresh from the grave, wet and cold.
Just a little slimy, just a little old.
Pretty greasy and dirty, he lived in a cave.
Never really had time to ever bathe.
    (Pass oily dirty plastic)

One eyeball went left, the other went right.
See poor John had very bad sight.
Fresh from the grave, wet and cold.
Just a little slimy, just a little old.
Handle them gently as they roll
John wouldn't like it if they fell from the bowl.
    (Pass 2 olives and spectacles)

Now John wasn't a very smart man.
We found his brains stuffed in a can.
Fresh from the grave, wet and cold.
Just a little slimy, just a little old.
You'll feel there isn't much to them
Shows the kind of man he'd been.
    (Pass cold wet sponge)

Now one thing John wasn't was bald
He had a nice head of hair I'm told
Fresh from the grave, wet and cold.
Just a little slimy, just a little old.
Just nice and fuzzy to the touch
I said he had some, but just not that much.
    (Pass damp oily fur)

One thing John was proud of was his pearly whites
A good set of choppers kept him fed right.
Fresh from the grave, wet and cold.
Just a little slimy, just a little old.
See his teeth were strong unlike his sight
Just be careful when you touch that they don't bite
    (Pass un popped popcorn)

Just like Vangough, he only had one ear
He always heard just fine, and perfectly clear.
Fresh from the grave, wet and cold
Just a little slimy, just a little old.
A little shriveled because of its age
But an ear nonetheless, it says on this page.
    (pass dried apricot)

The last thing we found, was Johns strong hands
They were down deep, covered with sand.
Fresh from the grave, wet and cold.
Just a little slimy, just a little old.
Cold and stiff as they were when he died.
Go ahead, shake one, or you'll think that I lied.
    (pass sand filled frozen gloves)

With all his pieces back safe and sound.
Time to put him back into the ground.
So now you've met my dear lamented friend
That brings this haunting to an end.

Oooh! Fun! Here are just a few ideas:

--Create a spiderweb - have all the kids sit in a circle and one kid starts with a ball of yarn (black, or yellow, or red... whatever you want) and have the kids throw the ball to each other - don't forget to have them hold on to the yarn! Add another ball (of a different color) if you're feeling adventurous. See what kind of designs you can make together. Throw those plastic spiders on them at the end to give a fun little scare.

--Jack o' Lantern mash up - Okay, start with pre-cut pumpkin silhouettes of varying shapes and sizes on orange construction paper. Have the kids sit in a circle - every one kid facing out/in (to avoid peeking!) - and each child gets a pumpkin and an array of markers or crayons. Give them 10 or 15 seconds to start the pumpkin - such as an eye, a mouth, a nose, a wart... whatever they want - and then they pass the pumpkin to the right when the time is up. Continue on until you have a finished pumpkin... the goal is to have an array of wacky and wonky Jack o' Lanterns they create together. Play music to time them - shut it off when they need to pass the pumpkin. Maybe the parents should provide an example just for ideas - really deck these out with warts, cuts, scrapes, patches, layers, big eyes, small eyes, seven eyes... whatever they want! It's an opportunity for them to get creative and work together.

--Scavenger hunt - Break them into groups/teams, or into two teams, and give them different lists of items to find (witch hat, skeleton hands, candy, baby/mini pumpkins, fake bats, spiders, broomstick... the list is endless).

--Depending on the size of the group, you could either make cupcakes beforehand (vanilla and/or chocolate) or have everyone make cupcakes together, and then provide them things to decorate the cupcakes.

--Create your own Frankenstein - Give them Halloween-ish magazines and have them cut out (with their handy dandy safety scissors, or the help of an adult) torsos, hands, feet, whatever, and allow them to glue together their very own Frankenstein.

I think that u love & enjoy with kids. Yes kids love listening to scary stories, except that they love different cartoon characters like Barbie doll, Dinosaurs, & spider man etc. For getting more ideas on kids birthday parties as well as supplies, i would love & be very thankful to you for visiting MyBirthdaySupplies.

Of course the classic bobbing for apples is a must for any child's memory bank. Load up on halloween music. You can find a lot of it here on the forum in the music section for free. If they seem aprehensive about dancing, have them "zombie dance" instead. It will help loosen them up. The blind body parts grab the others mentioned is always a HUGE hit. If any stay over, to wind things down, you cant go wrong with Goosebumps and other RL stine movies/stories. Good luck and take lots of pictures!!

Here are a few things I do for the kids at my Halloween party. We play a game of Numbskull (Hot potato with a light weight blow mold skull). We play three rounds with the winner of each round setting out. After you have the three winners, they then play off for the winner of numbskull and get a cool prize. The kids love it. For the smaller kids I also have a halloween Ring game. We have the small plastic pumpkins or witches cauldrons filled with M&M's and a marked monster ring in it.There is a also a small piece of paper wich identifies the ring. We hand the pails to the kids who get to eat the candy, they give me the paper wich goes into a small bag. We then draw out the paper and reveal the winning ring for prizes.

We lived out in the boonies in the 25 years we've been here we never have at a ToTer nor did many of my children' friends. So I'd throw this big Party for the kids, things got added or subtracted over the years but one thing was NEVER allowed to change, so from Kindergarten to middle school (when we had our last Halloween party) we had to "trick or teat". I recalled Trick or treating as a kid and wanted my own kids to have to same memories so I dreamed up this little idea. Invitations included a note for the guest to bring enough "treats; cookies, candy, stickers, pencils whatever, so each guest could get one... When guests arrived we tagged each guests bag of treats and set them aside. Guests made a treat bag at the craft table filled with pens, markers, crayons and such. After a few games like those already mentioned we started our trick or treating. Guests lined up and headed out the front door. The guest at the end of the line stayed inside and retrieved their bag of "treats". The first guest at the head of the line rings the doorbell, says Trick or Treat and the one inside hands out a treat, that first guest then comes in and finds their bag of give away treats, waits while the rest of the line passes the door to get their treats from guest #1. When the last guest gets their treat then Guest number #1 goes to the end of the line outside we close the door and wait for the new head of the line to ring the door bell say Trick or Treat, after Guest #3 gets their treat they come in get their giveaway while Guest #2 continues to hand out theirs. Guest #2 goes to the end of the line, close the door, wait for the doorbell and now Guest #3 hands out their treat to guest #4 who then comes in finds their give away while guest #3 finishes handing out then goes to the end and it starts all over again.

Some years we'd have over 30 guests and this could take forever. One year it rained and I tried to speed this up just by suggesting to make up treat bags while everyone ate pizza and watched a "scary" cartoon... NOPE every guest wanted to ring the doorbell and hand out their own treats so we moved to the back porch door.
