Looking for ideas for a kids Halloween theme Birthday party.

I figure costumes would be a must.
Maybe each kids gets to paint his own Jacko lantern.
any other age apporpriate ideas for 5 yr olds?

Last year we had a party for my daughter and friends. Most of the kids were 5 at the time. We did a foam pumpkin craft, spoon/eyeball relay race (ping pong ball painted like eyeball), and a mummy wrap race, and halloween bingo.

The mummy wrap was the best. The broke out into groups of three kids. One kid was the mummy and the other two each got a roll of toilet paper. They mummified their friend with the toilet paper. Words of advice, get the good toilet paper. The cheap stuff kept breaking which frustrated the kids, and made a huge mess of itty bitty toilet paper pieces blowing in my neighbor's yard.

Last year we had each kid bring a pumpkin to decorate, and they lost interest and ran off to play while us parents finished up haha
This year we're going to do the toilet paper mummy thing and maybe a scavenger hunt in the back yard. I was going to get a bunch of eyeballs, little skulls, bats, etc and have the kids go out back with flashlights to look for them. I'll give each kid a list and the first one to find everything gets a prize.
We might do one more activity (my daughter has requested bobbing for apples) and then just let them play/eat/whatever while the parents socialize a bit.

SOmeone posted in the past few days that using white crepe streamer rolls was better for mummy wrapping with little ones.

also with this age you have to have the spooky touch and feel things. Peeled grapes for eyeballs, cold spagehitti for brains, etc.

Spook it up and really set the stage for this with a dark, spooky room and mood music. Tell a story to hype it. I STILL remember this game/activity from when I was younger and that was in the 60s!!!!!

Someone did a large sign with a story last year about here lies Hal O Ween. It told of his untimely death many years ago on this very night and described the remains for everyone to touch and feel. It was great. It could be made age appropriate. I am planning to use it this year with adults and spoof it up a bit.
