I want different sound effects in each room. What's the cheapest way to achieve this. I have a sound system for outside and the kitchen but it leaves me 3 rooms short and I don't have much money spare at the minute.

I find good cheap deals on mini boom cd boxes at thrift type / 2nd hand stores. Mp3 player & a pc power speaker also works on the cheap.......

Laptops work as well!
I use ours in the bathroom tucked inside the cabinets...

For the bathroom, we hide the cdplayer with new batteries and mini speakers in the air vent... they can't figure out where it is to turn it off, and it's in the ceiling so they couldn't reach it even if they did figure it out. It isn't loud, but usually something creepy that fits the theme of the room - whispering, soft crying, creepy kid voices, skittering mice sounds... yes, we're evil.

Agreed
We usually use laptops or old cd players found from thrift stores. My husband, being the handy man he is, rigs a plunger switch in the door frame and runs the wire to the music source (usually hidden under the sink) Then when the door shuts, the music starts playing. We usually do this throughout the bathrooms. Its always funny to watch people go in the bathroom then open the door again to try and figure out what is going on. LOL
He just undoes one of the screws in the frame, then replaces it with a plunger switch. (you can usually get these from a hardware store) then when the door closes, it pushes the switch in and starts the music. The music however needs to be on repeat because even though you can't hear it when the door is open, it is still playing.
