    So here’s the deal -

We had our first annual party Halloween before last. Didn’t have one last year (rough year, Dad passed away, Grandma diagnosed with cancer….I’ll spare the rest of the gory details) The party must’ve been a hit because beginning late August of last year, people started asking us if we were having another one and were disappointed to learn that we were not. Already had a couple of people ask about this year so I better BRING IT to make up for missing last year!

Point is, I’m just getting back in the spirit, and am looking forward to going all out this year. This Halloween just so happens to coincide with my husbands 40th birthday (Oct. 19th). He’s made it very clear that he doesn’t want any big “Over the Hill” to do, but I feel like I have to do a 'lil something.

He obviously knows that we’re having the Halloween party (hence all the blucky’s I just drug down from the attic) but I’m struggling to come up with creative ways to incorporate his birthday and am hoping to include some sort of surprise element.

If it helps, we are pretty hard core partiers…ages 28 - 40+.

Expecting around 35 people. Décor is less gore, more Goth, Victorian, haunted castle type stuff.

    Any ideas???

What about a Dungeon of Doom party instead over Over the Hill.

I may be biased, but I find a murder mystery is always a great surprise, and makes the party stand out in people's memories, which is perfect for such a milestone b'day. Let me know if you want some recommendations on this front and I can help you find one that will fit!

Aside from that, what about adding an implement of dark-themed cake and presents hidden in a coffin? You could take a small portion of the party out to celebrate his birthday while still keeping true to his wishes. When he least expects it, roll out the cake and open the coffin (or wherever you hide the gifts).

Sounds like an interesting theme that would work with the style of decor that I'm drawn to. Hmmmm....

I've always wondered about murder mystery parties, but have never had one or even attended one before so I'm not quite sure what's exactly involved with hosting one.

    Love the coffin idea!
