FOr anyone going for a Mardi Gras type masquerade ball, the huge insulation foam pieces are great to cut and make gigantic masks. We used to to this for high school proms and parties.

A couple years ago we did "Bloody Mary's Masquerade" as our theme. Any costumes were welcome, not just masked ball themed costumes. But one part of the party was the bar with of course the bloody mary bar. We used potion labels to cover the ingredients
Bloody mary mix=Vampire blood
Hot sauce=dragons breath
etc...

I like the idea of having a theme drink. Bloody Mary's are a good idea. And maybe I could pre-mix some other stuff...

I'm doing a masquerade ball next year and thus will be watching this thread with extra interest. I've been slowly buying up masks, both wearable and decorative, since summer of last year
I also recommend hitting up thrift stores for silverplate items on which to serve your guests. To my amazement, buying silverplate this way is usually much cheaper than plasticware bought new, short of a dollar store of course.
I would include a lot of flower arrangements, ans maybe a chocolate or beverage fountain of some kind. I think candles are mandatory
Garlands of some kind? What were you thinking in terms of music?
I had - emphasis past tense - a wonderful link discussing the history of masked balls back to the late middle ages, and all of the modifications that went with each era. If I can find the link I'll post it here, but regardless, I recommend doing some background research on the history of masked balls for inspiration.
You might want to share this link with any guests experiencing difficulty with costume ideas.

Thats great! I hope you can find the link. I'm excited. We have actually come up with an idea that I think will allow me to minimize the amount of decorating I need to do in the backyard which is really nice.
We are going to (somehow) put a 15-20 foot pole in the backyard and attach christmas lights to the top. A friend of mine is making me some 10ft tall cardboard trees and I'm going to run the lights (about 6 strands) out to the tops of the trees and down around (think May Pole). I think this will create a pretty dramatic look. IF for some reason we can figure out the pole, I'm going to just run the lights from tree top to tree top. Still dramatic if not over the top.“We will eat you, after we eat your children … Now, time for the weather. Tiffany?” Russell Edgington - King of Mississippi

When I created The Masquerade-themed murder mystery party, I went to Venice in my head and set it in The Biblioteca Marciana - check it out for some inspiration, it's such an amazing venue, and there's even a virtual tour out there online you can check out. Deep golds and columns would be good, as well as lots of "art", like busts and things - the kind of stuff you could get on sale at garden centres at the end of the season.
