    Ok, so here's my problem...
Early this year (January-ish) I was beginning to plan this year's party...because, ya know, it's never too early to plan for Halloween!!! Anyways, after some careful thought and number crunching, I decided it probably wouldn't work out financially to have a party this year. But, (!) some wonderfully unexpected funds have come my way, so it's looking like this year is a go!!! Only problem is I'm scrambling to think of a theme. Last year I went with a haunted mansion type theme...I'm not opposed to a variation on this.
I had thought of a Victorian funeral parlor, but that seems too complicated for me. Any other ideas? I'm really into the whole ghost/haunted house type stuff, if that helps.
    Thanks!!!

If you're into the haunted house/ghost thing then Haunted Mansion covered it. A variant would be maybe a haunted pirate ghost ship/lighthouse theme. Maybe haunted swamp house.

If you are trying to save some cash you should do what I fail to do every year. REUSE YOUR DECOR! Either go with the same theme, or, like you said, a variation. Your "Victorian Funeral Parlor" sounds awesome! I would check your local party rental places and see what in the way of a coffin you can come up with, it may be enough to get you rolling. I rented a basic pinch-toed coffin for only $20! where I live two years back for a Vampire theme which sounds like it may also be a workable theme for you. Um some others that come to mind using the same victorian/haunted mansion ideas.

Sweeney Todd, Rocky Horror, Monster Mash, Frankenstien, dead poets/authors, victorian divination parlor, victorian witches/warlock society, and Phantom of The Opera. That's all I could come up with. Good luck!

How about an Edgar Allen Poe theme. Have a recording of Vincent Price/Christopher Walken/James Earl Jones reciting The Raven in the background and a beating heart(from the Tell Tale Heart) and have other props that suggest Poes various stories/poems. That would work within the Haunted Mansion theme?

That's a very good idea, especially since I love Poe!!! Thanks so much for the suggestion! Any ideas on what to do for some of the other stories/poems? I love the Pit and the Pindulem (sp?), and the Fall of the House of Usher...the Tell Tale Heart should be pretty easy; like you said, a beating heart and some other effects. Maybe I could devote a small section of the house to the Cask of Amantillado? Hmmm...great idea, thanks for your help!!

Well you might want an eyeball, still mounted in its surrounding skin also for the tell tale heart as I think at one point the protagonist cuts out the old mans eye. A gold bug(literally), Red decoration for the Masque of the red death(although a different coloured rooms would be ideal but impractical and expensive) , priests garb for the Pit and the Pendulum and chains liberally hnging around and the pendulum obviously!A partially decomposed body for M Valdemar, a black cat and a raven(or several maybe) and purple drapes. Gosh theres so many things you could do, depending on your budget. If you do the cask of Amontillado, you'd want to have a makeshift and partially built wall with the person on the wrong side!
