I threw my first Halloween party last year and one of my props was an interactive electric chair. Just a 2x4 framed chair with leather belts for restraints and an orbital sander bolted to the bottom to give the jolt. All this wrapped-up neatly with a strobe light bow. People could sit in the chair, put on the stainless steel bowl electrode hat thingy with dummy heavy guage wires and have someone else throw the switch to ride the lightning. It was a huge hit! Anyways.........was wondering if anyone had built any other of these "interactive" props before or had an ideal of a prop that actually simulates torture or capital punishment where the party-goers would have to participate....One ideal Ive had in the past is a guillotine where partiers could lay down while another throws the lever to drop the blade. Could work?Anything else would be appreciated.
Cj, I love this! I have a party for teenagers that this would be perfect for! I have two Lightning Reaction games that they play, but this is so much wilder! When you say that your orbital sander delivers the ride, do you mean you have it connected to vibrate the chair? Would you post pics? I really like shock effects - maybe a lie detector that gives a mild shock. Would there be a way to create a torture with an inversion table? Kind of like a torture rack. Some kind of endurance with ice - you know how bad it hurts at first when you ice down an injury! Please more details on the electric chair!
I pulled the chair out and took some quick pics for you. I plan on remaking the front of the chair to look like a more realistic chair, I like that three legged look. Also needs some finishing paint or stain. I threw this together in a long weekend last year and didnt spend lots of time giving it the detail it deserves. Its made from all scavanged stuff: stainless steel bowl, spring from a shower curtain rod to support the helmet, the fabric is an old black t-shirt my lady wanted gone, the wires came from a spare washing machine 220v connector. Only thing bought was a few 2x4s and the palm sander (10$ at Harbor Freight). Its all controlled by an electrical box with a switch and an outlet that when thrown operates the strobe and sander. Also plan on making a fully functional knife switch that operates the thing. Looking forward to that project! This project is all over the forums, and there are other chairs that are way better than this. Its worth a build!
Thanks for posting the pics, CJ. I love the "thrown together" look of the chair and the heavy duty wiring. It really looks menacing! I run groups of 3-5 through a party garage haunt and I was thinking of staging a mock execution using this type of chair. One member of the group must strap in while the rest act as audience. When the chair gets going, I'll pop the ones sitting on the metal viewing bench with a mild shock! I'm thinking "Green Mile" "roll on one, roll on two" with knife switches and prison guards. Your post was a perfectly timed inspiration for me - I had a large intro section of my haunt that I couldn't come up with a gag for. Thanks again! And if I come up with any other interactive torture ideas, I'll post them.
