Hey all. I’m planning a small scale Voodoo/deep South themed Halloween party this year. My plan is to just invite a few friends from my High School, have some tasty food, and show two movies: “Skeleton Key” and “Zombieland”. People can wear costumes if they want. I do need some ideas:
    1) What kind of food should I serve? I’m stuck between pizza, a few hot appetizers, and desserts, OR and actual dinner buffet with things like pulled pork sandwiches, and other Southern style food with Halloween-themed desserts.
    2) What kind of music should play while people arrive? Since this movie is about watching some scary flicks, I’m thinking stuff like Midnight Syndicate or Nox Arcana, but I’m not sure.
    3) How should decorate the kitchen? I’ve figured out every other room (porch – swamp; front hall – Haunted parlor; TV room – Southern plantation style séance room). But I’m stumped on the room.
If anyone has ideas, please post ‘em. Thanks!

I don't want to step on anyones plans but nothing says voodoo like the movie The Serpent and the Rainbow. A lot of the scenes have actual voodoo practitioners in Haiti as extras. That movie is disturbing and a real voodoo feel. I like your choice of The Skeleton Key which I enjoy a lot. For music, try getting the Skeleton Key sound track that has a real haunting sound and the chanting and music are all New Orleans. Do your decoration with mardi gras beads. You can get them cheap at the Party Store. Have lots of candles. A soundtrack of swamp creatures (look in the music section under swamp sounds) Lots of skulls, garlic, chicken parts. colored glass bottles hanging in trees, hanging Spanish moss, aligators, all are good decorations.

I was also going to suggest Serpent and the Rainbow. Thats a must if you want to do a voodoo party.

Wes Cravin was at his best with horror with Serpent and the Rainbow. ShadowBat is right on. It is a must for voodoo theme.

I absolutely loved The Skeleton Key and completely agree about the soundtrack.

Depending on your crowd, I'll also throw out the movie suggestion of "Live and Let Die" for a lighter more action-packed film with great visuals and memorable music. It's a 007 James Bond film with lots of action, scantly clad women, and Voodoo, fortune telling with Tarrot cards, New Orleans, graveyards, funeral with dirge, bayous, crocodile farm, snakes, an unforgettable explosive ending, and Baron Samedi (played by Geoffrey Holder) with that velvety deep bass voice and great laugh (Holder was the super tall guy who was in the 7up commercials in the 70s advertising the un-cola). Paul and Linda McCartney wrote the theme song which was performed by Wings.

Voodoo is associated with New Orleans, which is Cajun/Creole. For food, how about gumbo or jambalaya, then maybe muffaletta sandwiches or shrimp po-boys? Be sure to use some Spanish moss in your decorations. Make your own voodoo dolls (of your guests!?) and provide the pins! Snakes figure prominently in voodoo, so scatter a bunch around. You could dig up some Zydeco music to give it a New Orleans ambiance. During voodoo ceremonies, the participants usually dress in all white. Could be a costume idea - maybe add some blood from the chicken sacrifice! The Serpent and the Rainbow is a pretty accurate description of voodoo. The Benjamin January series of books by Barbara Hambly are set in 1830's NO, if you're a reader. It's been a long time since I've read them, but I think it was Graveyard Dust that featured a voodoo priestess. Perhaps your kitchen could look like a voodoo priestess's "lab", with weird spices, bones, whiskey (to appease the spirits), and creepy ingredients to make gris gris (talismans) and potions out of. I love New Orleans and would like to do this theme one year!

Put a cauldron in the kitchen. Inside it, place green goo (a plus if you can produce smoke and boiling effects), hang the skeletons of the food you're serving (fake will do, of course). Add a couple of plastic rats on the counter.

Change of plans: Looks like I won't be doing a theme for the party this time. Still having it, I just want to use more props that don't necessarily apply to a "voodoo" theme. Thanks for all the great ideas, though!

Here's 2 classic voodoo films you might like to look up

"Tales from the Crypt Presents: Bordello of Blood".
Slightly corny, some humor. Some blood and nudity,
So only good if no kids are about.

    "Warlock"-
Old but good. Black magic, to witch hunting.

    Good luck and happy viewing
    John
