My theme for my Halloween Party this year is Reaper Madness!
I am going to put as many grim reaper props as I can make, I have been collecting reaper robes for a while, but will probably whip up some more using BL's weed stop cloth just to get the numbers up.
I also want my guests to come dressed as Reapers.
The hubster said that I can't have a costume contest if I do that, but I can because I want everyone to put their own take on their reaper. ie: a housewife reaper might wear an apron, a dr. reaper could have a stethoscope around the neck, etc.
My biggest problem is what to do inside the house?!?
I've done witch, pirate, and vampire themes. But am at a loss with what would add to the theme as decor besides graveyard type stuff.
I love the shelves of hourglasses in Death's house in the Terry Pratchett books and his movies like Hogfather. I don't have shelves, but could create the effect with butcher paper or something to make a scene setter. I think that would look awesome down the hall.
Would love to hear any ideas for decor and props y'all have!

Can't think of anything specific, but have you seen the movie Monkey Bone? That might give you some idea.
Guess I can't think of anything because I can't get past how much I LOVE 'Reaper Madness'Man cannot live on bread alone.... (unless he is in a cage and that is all you feed him.)

Sounds like a great party theme. The hourglass idea is really cool. Maybe have other timepieces around. Old clocks, watches etc. Do something with sand- "the sands of time", set candles in dishes of sand. Maybe you could make an archway in your entrance or over a doorway with Grim Reaper scythes. Use some small ones, you could probably make them easily enough, to use as props on your refreshments. Oh, you could add a paper scythe blade to black cocktail stirrers for your drinks.

Love this idea! I think dramatic lighting would be important for this theme with splashes of color from the floor going up the walls and a mix of colors to create some depth. It would help take away from a lack of "scene" decorating. Dramatic lighting, time pieces, and tombstones. Indoor fog would be cool too.

IshWitch...that made me laugh out loud....I absolutely LOVE that theme!!!!
I agree with those things already suggested, lots of time pieces, hourglassess, scythes, and long black robes!!
The time pieces don't have to be real, either. Drawn and hung on the wall would be great...then you could make a REALLY big one!!
I'll think about it some more and see what else I can come up with. What is your invitation going to look like?

Thanks all! I'm glad to see my choice of title for the party didn't get lost on many of you! LOL! To riff on reefer madness was the whole intent when I came up with the theme. I just find it hysterical and hope the invitees get the joke! LOL!
I love the timepieces idea! Death's shelves upon shelves of hourglasses (one for each person in the world) was the only thing I could think of, but that is probably because it is so perfect as a visual, I could even put names on them like in the Terry Pratchett books and have some of them be those of the guests.
I also like the thought of colored lights shining up the walls, that could be quite striking.
Popsicles! Too funny!
Here is another thing I have planned, a Reaper Rapper mixing for the dance floor. The plan is to take a talking Boris skull and have it on a pvc frame, wearing a reaper robe, a big gold chain with a big gold scythe hanging around the neck, hands moving back and forth over a "mix board" and the Boris mic near the music speakers so that he is jawing along with the music. Still working out how to get the hands moving, but am hoping I can create a means by using a shiatsu under the mix board with bands attached to the hands in a manner that causes them to move up and down and maybe working sliders along with them.
Like I said, that's the plan, I hope to knock that one out soon, but am a terrible procrastinator! Have family coming to visit because of the new grandbaby and lately when hubby and I get home all we want to do is flop in front of the tube. I need to set a fire under my butt and that's why I posted this thread, get my juices flowing!

Thanks y'all!
