I pretty much wrote off having a party this year, due to the continuing limbo with our home possibly foreclosing (going on 2 1/2 years of this crud). Plus alot of the folks who come to our parties are only marginally (at best) into it, and we hardcore haunters know how THAT feels. But then I got involved with my daughter's high school play production, and all the wonderful folks involved.
And everything changed.
I got to know so many amazing families who LOVE any excuse to dress up, build props, etc., etc., and I said to m'self, "Self, these hardworking folks deserve a party".
A Pirate party, to be precise.
I mean really, why be down in the dumps about what may or may not happen? Sure, it won't be Costumes & Props Deluxe given my pauper's budget, but what could be more fun than a group of theatrical scallawags?
So if ye Old Coats and Salty Dogs know of any great prop & decorating tips that'd cost but a few pieces O eight, post yer suggestions here!
Yours in Rum,

Ugh, I totally know what you mean! Since I stumbled upon this forum last week, I've been talking about all sorts of stuff with my husband. I've been trying to get him excited about building props and coming up with ideas....but nada! The only thing he really did to 'get into it' was check the price of wood online. Completely annoys and upsets me that I married someone who isn't even HALF as into Halloween as I am. As far as people that came to my party last year, they all had a really good time and surprisingly, everyone dressed up. But they just don't understand the passion I have for the holiday. I even get teased because I countdown to Halloween

Glad to here you find some people who are into Halloween as well! Good luck, ye scurvy dog!
PS: There's a Pirate's group on here already. Don't know if your a member, but if you aren't you should join; lots of cool ideas! Some men would like to play God; I'd rather play the Devil...

Well, the party idea has been mutinied. My daughter says she's "SOOO not into the whole 'pirate' thing", and my husband, Mr. Halloween Grinch, keeps telling me we're broke. Funny how we always seem to have an extra $100 whenever HE wants to go out to dinner, though. But I digress.
Oh yeah. I forgot what happened last year: my husband refused to help with anything, and insisted on re-wearing (for the 3rd time) his stupid Sheik costume. I guess I'll just have to have a party vicariously through all of you.

Within my family three of my daughters couldn't careless about the props I make or purchase for the halloween event I have done and still doing. While I get excited like a kid to candy summon them to come and see, they half-heartedly say "ah huh looks good" "just like to go to the party and dress up" I keep hoping for a miracle they will be more excited and join in instead of telling me isn't too early to think about Halloween???
Then there is my husband, he just nods at my ideas or at times I feel he ignores me haha. Once in awhile he gets frustrated with me when I spend alot of time making my props making a comment of " guess I will see you next year since halloween is the only thing on your mind"
He's getting better with it though, this year he caught himself saying it again, then apologized gave me a hug and told me he realizes it means alot to me. Although he doesn't get all to excited through the months I am preparing, he will help me on some projects if need be. Every year he grumbles that he has to be in costume, yet when the day comes, who is the one making a fuss when it comes to putting makeup on!! HIM!!
To keep cost down, hubby somehow will find material for me in making stuff with, thankful for that, and never tells me we can't do it. Wait until I tell him we have to move all my halloween stuff over to another place to celebrate LOL!
