So I had my first (hopefully annual) Halloween bash this year on October 16th (a Saturday). It went really well...the food looked and tasted great, the conversation was awesome, and my guests all seemed to really have a good time and I got lots of compliments afterwards. However, there was just one problem. It wasn't so much a problem as it was an oddity. All of my guests (mostly work friends with a few others thrown in) simply got their food, and then sat at the kitchen table and talked for the rest of the night. No games were played, no pumpkins were carved (although everyone brought one), and there was no "mingling" to speak of. Like I said, this wasn't necessarily a problem, I just want to know how to create a more "mingly" social atmosphere. Any ideas, anyone? Next year, I'm hoping to invite more people and have a more diverse crowd, instead of just work friends. I think that might help.
Any ideas you all have are appreciated!

Here's a quick idea that I do. Put the bar in another room away from the food. People have to get up to refill their drinks and so they'll mingle more. In fact, it's so effective that they'll group around the bar more than the food. But, if there's no chairs by the bar then they'll go back to the other room eventually. Rinse and repeat.

Theres always the games route as well. We had cornhole boards set up outside (where the party mostly took place) and there were people playing all night long. Even when they couldnt see very well! LOL it was funny and everyone was laughing. We also had a couple firepits going and some were gathered around there telling stories and talking. In the house we had movies playing. In every location there were groups gathered talking and it seemed as if everyone was moving from one location to another seeing what was going on at each. So, have different "things" at different areas and there will be more mingling.

As OCD as this might sound, I always have a "schedule" posted as to when games will be played (like trivia) and prizes awarded (costume contest). I agree with the previous post to have things like the food and bar in separate areas. I try to spread the things to do around as much as I can so when people are going from point A to point B they might stop and talk to someone new along the way.

I find that just doing finger foods or things that u can eat without needing to really sit or cut (like sausages in rolls) helps because then people don't sit down to eat or if they're involved in a game can continue while eating.

Or, if you like me- I started on the karaoke and then dragged people up to the mic

What Terra said. I've been having a Halloween party for years and always had the same "problem" of people clustering in one spot (mostly the kitchen). Even with games involved, I'd have to fetch people from the kitchen to come play. Two years ago, I moved the drinks into the family room and kept the food in the dining room, and it made such a difference. Give it a try next year.
