I've always been an explorer. We'ld go hiking off into the back woods, off trails, didn't matter. Did some treasure hunting back in my youth, found a number of "lost" gold mines and the like, and explored them. We find area marked "cat canyon" on the map, and just have to go hike down through it (all the while cursing the decision as you could SMELL cat urine, and there were deer bones and carcasses 8ft up in trees...)
But, this is the place that really creeped me out most. I drive my this place every day, and one of the days I got this feeling that I NEEDED to go down and explore the area. I duly ignored it, but it just wouldn't go away, and every day, I'ld get that feeling again. But, it was the middle of winter, I couldn't just go packing up to head down there. Spring finally came, and I made plans to head out on my day off.
I planned thuroughly, with rope and gear just in case of anything, had my cell phone. Parking my car as close as I could off the freeway, and walk over to the rim. It's a steep ledge, densly wooded, I can't see the bottom, and can't see any easy means of decent. So, we break out the climbing gear and decend to the bottom.
Since my focus is mostly on the rope and ledge during the decent, I did not bother to look BEHIND me until I got to the bottom. Unhooking myself, I turned around to find a clearing, obviously PURPOSELY cleared, no grass, no rocks, perfectly level and clean. And, all around the tree canopy was hanging skulls and assorted bones off ropes up in the trees. On the far side of the clearing, right next to the river was a shelter built up, and had been covered with the grasses from the clearing to make it watertight. A few bones decorated the doorway.
SOMEONE was LIVING down here. If they were around, they had seen me climbing down, and I was already fubar. So, no point stopping now, I moved forward, and inspected everything.
The bones were hung by what seemed random bits of rope. Remnants of a firepit that hadn't seen use in some time. The bedding in the shelter appeared to have been neglected as well. No footprints could be seen around the wet soil, so I started feeling a little more at ease. I found an easy path in and out on the OTHER side of the hollow, well used. Must have been a game trail, and obviously what whoever had lived down here used.
Bits of tools and equipment lay scattered around, fish traps in the river, all in disrepair. I scouted around for some time, and couldn't shake the feeling I was in someone else's 'home'. What if they left for the winter and were coming back? What if they died down here and I find their corpse? Why are they hanging bones around? Are they all animal bones? (wierd things cross your mind in such a place)
Eventually, I packed what skulls I could reach and climbed my way back out. Those skulls get displayed each year. I've been meaning to head on back down there and see...is the place still in use? Are they looking for who stole their skulls? Why did the place 'call' to me?
