I was just watching ghost hunters and got to thinking about the only ghostly experience I have ever had and wanted to share it -- it happened about 30 years ago when my oldest son was 2 and my youngest son was only 6 months old. My ex-husband and I were looking to buy a house. We loved old houses and I found an old New England cape built in the 1600s in a nearby town that was selling for about $12,000 -- a good price even for the early 80's. So I talked my ex into going to look at it -- when we pulled up, we noticed it was in a really nice area and couldn't believe the house was selling so cheaply. The real estate agent met us in the drive way and warned us that the house was in really bad shape inside -- in fact, he told us that the house had been abandoned for the last ten years and the previous owners had removed the antigue fireplace and chimney, and sold them, leaving a vast gaping hole in the floor and wall where it had been. He said the floorboards were extremely unstable as a result and that we should proceed cautiously. He told us that the water to the house had been turned off for the last ten years, and there was no electricity in the house either. He also rather vehemently stated that the house should be torn down.
The first place he took us was down the basement to see the old furnace and pipes. My ex was carrying our two year old, and I was carrying the baby. As we were looking around, the pipes above us began clanging wildly. I thought nothing of it, pipes clang in old houses, but the real estate agent and my husband looked oddly unsettled, and my ex led the way immediately out of the basement.
We went upstairs and walked past the hole where the fireplace had been, that's when I first started feeling a bit creeped out, although it wasn't anything specific that I could really put my finger on. I also have to say that I did NOT believe in ghosts or haunted houses, either, so that thought hadn't crossed my mind. Otherwise, the house was absolutely gorgeous and all original. I couldn't believe anyone would desecrate it that way and that it had been empty all those years.
I don't remember much about the rest of the first floor -- then the agent said he would show us the attic -- he opened the attic door and the stairs were those old narrow straight up stairs -- this part of the house looked like it had virtually never been touched since house was built in the 1600s. We went up the old stairs and into the dusty attic -- there were extremely old trunks and antiques up there, which again surprised me that no one had removed them or done anything to the attic. Antiques were valuable and I was just amazed they were still in situ, where they had obviously always been!
I was getting excited, I felt for the price we could renovate the house and even fix the fireplace. I just loved the place in spite of all its flaws. That is, until the agent took us back down to the second floor -- we walked into a gorgeous large open room with the original old wooden floors and he was talking to us about the house -- then I noticed the graffiti on the wall behind him -- at first I thought, darn teenagers have gotten in here, but then I noticed the graffiti was the creepiest looking I had ever seen, it's hard to describe but it was three very simple drawings, one of a cat and one of a dog, with a pitchfork in between -- but the drawings were indescribably evil.
That's when I first felt scared. It had begun to rain outside and I remember feeling "I have to get out of this house -- NOW!" It was so weird -- I still hadn't associated my feelings with ghosts or hauntings, that was the furthest thing from my mind. Then my two year old son piped up "That man who lived here was REALLY BAD!!!" I thought that was an odd thing for him to say, but by that time all I could think about was getting out as fast as I could -- so I sort of led the way with the baby in my arms downstairs, through the living room and although it was raining pretty hard outside, I just rushed out of the house.
As we were leaving, my ex, who DID believe in ghosts and hauntings, said oh my God, that house was haunted! I laughed and said "oh sure!" Then we started comparing notes -- he said, didn't you hear the pipes clanging in the basement? The agent said the water was turned off to the house ten years ago -- how could the pipes be clanging with no water in them? And no electricity to even turn anything on? I was like "oh." Then I mentioned the graffiti on the second floor, which he hadn't noticed but that had creeped me out. And then he said, didn't you hear what our son said about that bad man? I do believe that kids are tuned into things that adults aren't, so I did give that credence. And then I remembered how I just couldn't get out of that house fast enough -- all I could think of was get out, get out, get out.
After that I sort of started believing in ghosts. That was just the creepiest thing that I ever experienced and you couldn't have paid me a million dollars to stay there overnight!! I felt bad for the old house, but like the real estate agent, I believed that house should probably be torn down!

That is creepy! I wonder what the history is and why the antiques were still in the attic.
