A few years ago on a trip for work I came across an abandoned hotel in, of all places, Mineral Wells, TX, west of Fort Worth. I was so taken with the place and had to take a bunch of photos and learn more about it. I ended up writing an article and thought I'd share it here with people who like a good (maybe) ghost story and might want to visit the Baker Hotel sometime. Here's more on it:

Looks like "www.spiritofthebaker.com" lost their domain name.

I used to live in Weatherford and have traveled to MW on many occasions. It's most certainly a captivating building and I'd LOVE to go inside for a tour some day..or night.

I actually have a mirror from the Baker. It's old, old, old. I came upon it quite oddly, after a friend of mine had been doing some clean up work in the Baker. It was to be thrown away but he took it with him because a friend of his wanted it. He showed it to me an I just HAD to have it so he gave it to me and told his friend it broke or something.

Let me tell you, there are strange things about this mirror. It, for fear of sounding crazy, is attached to me I know that sounds weird. One time a few years ago a friend of mine expressed how much she adored it, I told her I'd had it for 15 years so she could take it. I carried it to her car and she left. As I walked back in to my house I noticed my hand was sliced right down the palm and bleeding, but it didn't hurt. I went inside to bandage it and my phone rang, it was my friend EXTREMELY upset and crying, said as she turned off my street a cat darted in front of her and she hit it (this chick LOVES cats so this was devastating to her) she cried "I don't want this mirror, I'm bringing it back!" then I told her about my hand. It was crazy.
"Where ya going, baby? You going to get the corpses?"
"Yes, Moe...I'm going to get the corpses..."

OMG! I can't believe you posted this! I live in Mineral Wells!

As far as visiting the Baker - you can't. Not legally anyway. The property is privately owned and technically condemmed. It truly is very unsafe to enter, especially if you don't know your way around. Not that people don't go in anyway, but there have been quite a few arrests for doing just that. Plus the vandalism has gotten way out of control so they are really patroling the site now.

It was at one time, an awesome building with a fascinating history of celebrities, etc.
Now, it is just very sad looking. It is quickly reaching eyesore status.

I've been inside, both when it was open as a retirement home in the 70's and a few years ago on a private tour before it was declared condemmed. The only "paranormal" experience I had was smelling the scent of lavender in the rooms supposedly occupied by Mr. Baker's mistress. There are hundreds of stories about "hauntings" in the baker but most are simply local legend. Very few have actual documentation to back them up.

Thanks for posting about my little hometown though! That doesn't happen too often!
